The Houston Astros face the Seattle Mariners on Monday, September 21st at T-Mobile Park for game one of a three-game series.
It does not get any more imperative than this series for the Seattle Mariners this season. The Mariners enter this series trailing the Astros by 4.0 games for second place in the AL West division. Second place is substantial this season, as due to the expanded MLB playoffs, each divisions' first and second place winners automatically make the postseason. The Mariners have a shot to grab second place in the division, but the team really needs a sweep at home in this three-game series. The Mariners are currently 23-30 on the year, which is a record that no one thought could have had a chance at the postseason this late in the season. The Astros are one game above .500 at 27-26, as they will try to hold on to second place in the AL West.
The Houston Astros are set to bring right-hander Lance McCullers to the mound to face the Mariners. McCullers is 3-2 with a 4.87 ERA through 44.1 innings this season with the Astros. McCullers did not allow a single earned run through 7.0 innings against the Texas Rangers in his last start on September 16th.
The Seattle Mariners will send left-hander Marco Gonzales to the bump for Monday's contest. Gonzales is 6-2 with a 3.49 ERA through 56.2 innings this season with Mariners. Gonzales allowed five earned runs on six hits and a walk through 6.0 innings in his most recent outing against the Oakland Athletics on September 14th. Gonzales can usually pitch deep into games, and the Mariners would need him to do so in this one.
Even though their season is on the line, I cannot take the Mariners in this spot. The odds are tempting, but Lance McCullers should be able to pitch well in this game for an Astros team trying to clinch a playoff spot. I expect the Astros to run away with this game early, and I will take Houston on the run line in this spot for added value.
