Newcastle United (WWDLL) and Sheffield United (DWWDW) will meet on Sunday, June 21st for an English Premier League match. The match is scheduled for a 9:00 AM EST start time and will be played at St. James' Park.
This will be the first match since the break for Newcastle, while Sheffield has already played a match this week against Aston Villa.
Newcastle's last match was played on March 7th against Southampton, and that was a win in front of the Southampton supporters. Newcastle was on a two-game win streak before the break, playing solid soccer away from home. Newcastle United currently sits at 13th in the English Premier League standings, which is a good enough distance away from relegation. Of course, Newcastle United will be looking for more than just survival in the EPL, as making a statement after the over two-month break would be nice for a team like Newcastle.
Sheffield United was able to earn the draw against Aston Villa, which actually is more than likely a disappointment for the football club. Sheffield United was visibly not at 100% on the field on Wednesday, as even though they held the possession advantage at 55% to 45%, they were outshot by almost three-to-one on overall shots. Regarding shots on target, Sheffield United was only able to put one on net, while Aston Villa had six. Not to mention that Aston Villa had a 3:1 advantage in corner kicks as well. Sheffield was not winning that match on Wednesday, so a draw was probably the best-case scenario, which is not a good look for this team.
The last time these two teams played against each other was on December 5th of 2019. That match was a 2-0 victory for Newcastle United away from its home supporters. In fact, Sheffield United is 0-1-4 (W-D-L) against Newcastle United in the last five matches these two teams have played against each other, dating back to 2007.
If Sheffield United had not already played a match this week, I do not think they would be as big of favorites as they are in this one. Newcastle United has dominated Sheffield United in recent history, and Sheffield looked horrible against Aston Villa. The big advantage for Sheffield United, however, is that they have already gotten a chance to wipe off some rust from the long break, and could be more prepared physically than Newcastle United. Nonetheless, I think the safer bet is to take the over 2.0 goals. Newcastle United has allowed 41 goals this season, and I can definitely see both of these teams scoring in this one.
