The Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros meet in game one of the World Series from Minute Maid Park on Tuesday night.
The Washington Nationals come into their first World Series in franchise history well rested after sweeping the Cardinals in four games following a 7-4 win in game four last time out. Trea Turner and Yan Gomes each had two RBIs while Anthony Rendon, Juan Soto and Victor Robles each had an RBI with Soto going 2 for 4 with a double to round out Washington’s scoring as a team in the win. Adam Eaton added a double while Gerardo Parra added a base hit to cap off Washington’s offense as a team in the win. Patrick Corbin got the win after giving up four runs on four hits while walking three and striking out 12 over five innings of work. Daniel Hudson closed things out for his 2nd save. Max Scherzer will start game one and is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA and 29 strikeouts this postseason.
The Houston Astros will look to make some noise after winning their series with the Yankees in six games following a 6-4 win in game six last time out. Yuli Gurriel went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs while Jose Altuve went 2 for 4 with a double and the walk-off two run home run. Alex Bregman added an RBI to finish off Houston’s scoring as a team in the win while Michael Brantley and Martin Maldonado each had a base hit as the Astros had six hits as a team in the victory. Roberto Osuna ended up with the win in relief as Houston deployed a bullpen strategy in game six. Gerrit Cole will start game one and is 3-0 with a 0.40 ERA and 32 strikeouts this postseason.
Washington is 14-3 in their last 17 games following a win and 4-0 in their last 4 road games while the under is 9-1 in their last 10 games against the AL West. Houston is 55-22 in their last 77 games overall and 40-12 in their last 52 home games while the under is 3-1-1 in their last 5 World Series games. Washington is 19-7 in the last 26 meetings between these two teams and 8-1 in the last 9 meetings between these two teams in Houston.
I fully get Houston being favored at home because the Astros are fresh off of the walk-off series win against the Yankees and there’s concerns of rust with Washington having such a long layoff before the first World Series in franchise history. However, the flipside is that the Nationals are well-rested and a back and forth series like Houston had with the Yankees can leave some guys drained even with a couple of days to rest. We’re also getting heavy plus money with a rested Nationals team with their staff ace on the mound, and it’s very rare that you’ll get Max Scherzer with this kind of plus money. Washington has been defying the odds all postseason, so why not take another shot with them here. I’ll take a stab with the Nats and the heavy plus money here.
