The Tampa Bay Rays and the Houston Astros meet in a winner-take-all game five in the ALDS in MLB action from Minute Maid Park on Thursday night.
The Tampa Bay Rays will look to complete the series comeback and win the series after a 4-1 win in game four on Tuesday. Tommy Pham and Willy Adames each had a solo home run with Pham going 3 for 5 at the dish. Joey Wendle had a double and an RBI and Travis D’Arnaud had an RBI to finish off Tampa Bay’s scoring as a team in the win. Avisail Garcia went 4 for 5 at the dish while Brandon Lowe added a double and Ji-Man Choi and Kevin Kiermaier each had a base hit to round out the Rays’ offense as a team in victory. Ryan Yarbrough got the win while Blake Snell closed things out for his first save. Tyler Glasnow will start game five and is 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA this postseason.
The Houston Astros will look to bounce back and win the series after dropping both games on the road at Tropicana Field with Tuesday’s defeat. Robinson Chirinos’ solo home run was the lone RBI that the Astros would plate in the losing effort while George Springer went 2 for 4 and Yordan Alvarez added a double. Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman each had a base hit as the Astros had just six hits as a team in the losing effort. Justin Verlander took the loss, falling to 1-1 in this year’s playoffs after giving up all four runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts over 3.2 innings of work. Gerrit Cole will start game five and is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 15 strikeouts this postseason.
Tampa Bay is 1-4 in their last 5 road games and 0-5 in their last 5 ALDS road games while the under is 4-1 in Glasnow’s last 5 road starts. Houston is 27-4 in Cole’s last 31 home starts and 39-12 in their last 51 home games while the over is 17-6 in their last 23 ALDS games. Tampa Bay is 1-5 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Houston.
Tampa Bay and the heavy plus money is worth a look given that the Rays have a ton of momentum with winning both games at home and making this a one game series, winner-take-all here. However, as good as Glasnow has been, I’m not sure he’s the guy I’d want taking the ball in a pressure situation like this one when Gerrit Cole is the guy on the mound on the other side. Cole was lights out in his first start and has continued his insane tear lately. Since the all-star break, Cole is 11-0 with a 1.79 ERA as well as a 5-0 mark with a 1.07 ERA in September and October. Including the postseason, Cole has gone 6-0 with a 1.79 ERA at home and still hasn’t taken a loss since late-May. I have to side with Houston here, especially at home and to get rid of the juice, I’ll back Houston on the RL.
