The Tampa Bay Rays and the Houston Astros will meet up in MLB Division Series Game 1 action Friday.
The Rays managed to snag a Wild Card berth this season, matching up Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics. Tampa jumped out to a 3-0 lead in that one after two innings, and ended up with a 5-1 victory to move on.
For Friday’s Game 1, Tampa will send out Tyler Glasnow in the start. Over 60.2 innings and a 6-1 record this season, Glasnow put up a 1.78 ERA with 76 Ks and 14 BBs.
Over on the Astros’ side, they’re going with Justin Verlander in the Game 1 start Friday. Verlander was 21-6 over 223.0 innings this year with a 2.58 ERA, 300 Ks and 42 BBs.
The Rays are 4-0 in their last four in game one of a series and 6-0 in the last six Friday games. Tampa is 5-1 in their last six after an off day and 38-18 in the last 56 overall.
Meanwhile, the Astros are 38-13 in the last 51 home games and 41-15 in their last 56 after a win. Houston is 37-14 in their last 51 after an off day and 50-20 in their last 70 Friday games.
Glasnow has been clean over his last three starts, giving up just four hits across a span of 10.1 innings with 16 strikeouts. He hasn’t gone past 4.1 innings in any of his last four starts though, so he’ll get pulled at the first sign of trouble.
Verlander is about as reliable as they come nowadays, so Tampa will be hard-pressed to get much of anything here. I’m going to stick with the Astros.
