The Washington Nationals and the Los Angeles Dodgers meet in game one of the NLDS from Dodger Stadium on Thursday night.
The Washington Nationals will look to build off of a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Milwaukee in the NL wild card game in their last outing. Juan Soto had two RBIs while Trea Turner added a solo home run. Ryan Zimmerman, Victor Robles and Howie Kendrick each had a base hit as the Nationals had just five hits as a team in the winning effort. Max Scherzer gave up three runs on four hits while walking three and striking out six over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Stephen Strasburg got the win in relief to improve to 1-0 this postseason while Daniel Hudson closed out the 9th for the save. Patrick Corbin will start game one and was 14-7 with a 3.25 ERA and 238 strikeouts in the regular season. In his career, Corbin is 5-9 with a 3.36 ERA and 101 strikeouts against the Dodgers.
The Los Angeles Dodgers will look to open the series on a high note after finishing the regular season with a record of 106-56, winning their 7th straight NL West division title. Cody Bellinger led the Dodgers with 47 home runs and 115 RBIs while boasting a .305 batting average with a team-high 170 hits and 3 triples. Corey Seager led L.A. with 44 doubles while Chris Taylor has a team-high 4 triples. Hyun-Jin Ryu and Clayton Kershaw were the headliners in the Dodgers’ pitching rotation, but the third head on the three-headed monster was Walker Buehler, who went 14-4 with a 3.26 ERA and 215 strikeouts in the regular season, leading the team in K’s and getting the start in game one on Thursday. In his career, Buehler is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA and 15 strikeouts against Washington.
Washington is 4-0 in Corbin’s last 4 starts and 36-16 in their last 52 games overall while the over is 2-0-2 in Corbin’s last 4 starts against a team with a winning record. Los Angeles is 6-2 in Buehler’s last 8 home starts and 37-17 in their last 54 games overall while the under is 8-1-1 in their last 10 playoff home games. Washington is 3-9 in the last 12 meetings between these two teams and 16-35 in the last 51 meetings between these two teams in Los Angeles.
You could make a case for either side as both have been red hot lately. Corbin struggled in his last start and hasn’t been as good on the road as he’s been at home, but he’s been arguably the most underrated arm in Washington’s rotation. On the other hand, Buehler’s been good at home, but his ERA is nearly half a run higher at home than on the road this season. I think both starters are going to take a cautious approach to this one and I don’t expect this game to be high-scoring at all, so I’ll side with the under in this contest.
