The Tampa Bay Rays and the Oakland Athletics will meet up on the MLB diamond Wednesday for a Wild Card showdown.
Tampa just came off a set against the Blue Jays to close out the season. The Rays took a 6-2 win on Friday but fell 4-1 Saturday and 8-3 Sunday.
In the Wednesday game, Tampa is sending out Charlie Morton in the start. Across his 194.2 innings and 16-6 record so far Morton has a 3.05 ERA with 240 Ks and 57 BBs.
Over on the A’s side, they’re going with Sean Manaea in the start Wednesday. Manaea has 29.2 innings and a 4-0 record this year with a 1.21 ERA and 30 Ks.
The Rays are 8-1 in their last nine in game one of a series and 4-1 in their last five after an off day. Tampa is 5-0 in MOrton’s last five starts and 4-1 in his last five Wednesday starts.
Meanwhile, the A’s are 4-0 in their last four Wednesday games and 4-0 in Manaea’s last four starts. The A’s are 4-0 in Manaea’s last four on grass and 8-2 in his last 10 home starts.
Morton has been dealing lately with four straight quality starts. In that time he’s put up eight earned over four starts and is 2-0 in that stretch.
Manaea has been equally stellar with just four earned in his last six outings. In most other years, Tampa should be hosting a playoff game; they’re that good. I’m going to stick with the dangerous Rays here; they could go all the way.
