Winthrop Eagles Betting Preview

Last year Winthrop put up a much-improved overall record compared to the season before. The Eagles went 23-11 overall and 11-5 in a competitive Big South. In the standings Winthrop finished behind only High Point and UNC Asheville. Winthrop hit a nice 8-1 run to finish off the regular season (with a lone loss to High Point) then beat Longwood and UNC Asheville in the Big South Tournament. Winthrop’s season would come to an end in game three however, as the team lost to High Point again 81-69 on March 9, ending their campaign.

Winthrop took on Queens U in their opener game on Monday. The Eagles had a 40-35 edge in the first half, then hit a 41-39 run the rest of the way during an 81-74 win. Topping the scorers on the team during the win was Daylen Berry with 23 points and five boards. Logan Duncomb added 12 points with eight rebounds in 22 minutes, and Tommy Kamarad notched 10 points with one rebound in just 10 minutes of work during the victory.

George Mason Patriots Betting Preview

Over on the George Mason side, they also logged an improved record last season. The Patriots went a solid 27-9 overall and 15-3 in the Atlantic 10. That effort earned the Patriots a regular season co-championship along with VCU. After a 3-1 run heading into the Atlantic 10 Tournament, the Patriots beat George Washington and Saint Joseph’s before a loss to VCU in the championship game. George Mason got a bid in the NIT though, and beat Samford before a second-round loss to Bradley on March 22.

This year the Pats opened up their season with a game versus Wofford on Monday. George Mason held a modest seven-point lead at the break, then hit a 41-24 tear that earned the team an eventual 70-46 blowout win. Leading the way was Kory Mincy with 18 points and six assists, while Riley Allenspach added 12 points with four rebounds. Masai Troutman also finished in double-digits with 10 points and six boards in the home victory effort.

Winthrop vs George Mason Prediction

I’ll stick with George Mason, but this should be a fun matchup. The Patriots had a modest first half in their win over Wofford this week, but eventually shot 47.3 percent from the field with a 35.3 percent effort from 3-point range (6-of-17). George Mason had a 34-31 rebounding edge and a 34-18 advantage in the paint as well. If the Patriots can get another solid defensive effort in game two, they’ll be in good shape against Winthrop.

Speaking of the Eagles, they played fairly well versus Queens U, but did get outscored in the paint by a 38-30 margin. Winthrop didn’t shoot spectacularly well from the field either (38.7 percent) but did great at the line on a 25-31 (80.6 percent) clip. The Eagles really need to get that shooting percentage up; otherwise I like George Mason to win the battles up front and post a gritty cover in this one. Should be a fun game to watch regardless.

Andrew Jett's Pick: George Mason Patriots -11.5
