The Cougars were 3-3 in their first six outings, beating East West U, UTSA and Drake along with losses to Indiana State, Wisconsin and Air Force otherwise. Since then it’s been a three-game win streak with victories over Alabama State, Missouri Baptist and North Florida. That gives the Cougars a 6-3 record across their first nine games so far this year.
In their last game versus North Florida on Tuesday, the Cougars held a modest 30-29 edge at the break. I’ll probably lean toward SIU Edwardsville here but I’m also probably not touching it. The Cougars shot a tepid 40.6 percent from the field and 12-of-19 (63.2 percent) from the line in their latest win over North Florida, relying heavily on Malith for 31 of their 72 points. The end result was a nine-point road win though, thanks in part to a 37-24 advantage on the boards and some pretty good defense. SIU Edwardsville is on a nice roll across this three-game win streak; they’ve got 72 or more points in all three of those and 83 or more in two of them.
As for Western Michigan, they got past Southern Indiana without too many issues this week. The Broncos shot a nice 55 percent from the field in that one with 10-of-23 (43 percent) from outside and a 41-33 rebounding advantage. WMU was great in the paint as well with a 44-16 advantage there. If the Broncos can keep it up Saturday this will be a great matchup.
