Utah Utes Betting Preview

The Utes kicked off the season on a nice 5-0 run, but then hit the rocks. Utah went just 3-4 over the next seven games with wins over Ole Miss, Cal Baptist and Eastern Washington. Since then it’s been losses to Washington, Arizona, Colorado, BYU, Texas Tech and Kansas State (with a win over TCU) in the last seven outings. That gives the Utes a 9-10 run through 19 games this year.

In the Kansas State matchup on Tuesday, the Utes entered the second half with a 46-43 deficit. Utah was able to keep the pace from there on a 35-35 run but couldn’t make up the difference in the end during a tough road loss 81-78. Terrence Brown led the team on 33 points with four rebounds and two assists while both Seydou Traore and Don McHenry each had 15 points, three assists and six boards.

BYU Cougars Betting Preview

Over on the Cougars’ side, they’ve had a pretty great year so far. BYU lost to UConn in their fourth game of the year but otherwise won 16 of their first 17 games, taking out the likes of Villanova, Wisconsin, Miami, Clemson, Kansas State, Arizona State, Utah and TCU along the way. Following another loss to Texas Tech last weekend, the Cougars are sitting on a 16-2 overall run.

Matched up against Texas Tech last Saturday in their most recent appearance, the Cougars were down by just one point 32-31 by the break. BYU was outscored 52-40 the rest of the way however, leading to an 84-71 road loss in the end. Robert Wright topped the team in the losing effort with 28 points, three assists and five rebounds. Richie Saunders added 18 points and four rebounds as well.

Utah vs BYU Prediction

I’ll lean toward BYU. The Cougars need a good bounce-back game after their road loss to Texas Tech last weekend, and this is a solid spot to get it. BYU shot 42.2 percent from the field in that one with a 40-28 advantage on points in the paint but also went just 5-of-22 (22.7 percent) from 3-point range and had 12 turnovers along the way. Texas Tech also did quite well from the line (19-of-23 for 82.6 percent). BYU has scored 71 or more points in nine straight games though, and should put up a nice total here.

As for Utah, they shot well (49.2 percent) and rebounded well (a 31-27 advantage) alongside just eight turnovers in their loss to Kansas State. Trouble is, the Utes gave up 50 percent on the other side and 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from 3-point range and only got to the line 10 times (making six). Utah has their work cut out for them here, and they’ve lost six of the last seven games.

Andrew Jett's Pick: BYU Cougars -18.5
