Utah Valley Wolverines Betting Preview
Utah Valley didn’t start out the year so well but they’ve been a lot better since mid-December. The Wolverines lost six of their first 11 games, then hit a win streak over Idaho State, Weber State, Bethesda U, Abilene Christian, Grand Canyon, Cal Baptist, TX-Arlington, Utah Tech, Cal Baptist and Seattle U. After a loss to Grand Canyon to kick off February, Utah Valley has since hit another win streak. Those victories have come versus TX-Arlington, Tarleton State, Southern Utah, Utah Tech, Seattle, Southern Utah and Abilene Christian in succession. In total over 29 games that gives the Wolverines a 22-7 record this year.
In the Abilene Christian road rematch back on Thursday, the Wolverines came into the locker room with a 36-29 advantage. Utah Valley kept it going from there on a 37-31 run and took the victory in the end 73-60. Topping the team in scoring was Dominick Nelson with 22 points, four rebounds and two assists. Tanner Toolson added 14 points with three rebounds and one steal, while Jackson Holcombe led the bench scoring on six points with four rebounds in 16 minutes.
Tarleton State Texans Betting Preview
Over on the Texans’ side, they had a couple of decent (and brief) runs in December and January but aside from that it’s been a struggle. Tarleton State lost 10 of their first 13 outings before a win streak over Howard Payne, Florida A&M, TX-Arlington and Southern Utah. A 3-6 run came next with wins over Cal Baptist, Utah Tech and Southern Utah among losses to Utah Tech, Grand Canyon, Abilene Christian, Seattle, Utah Valley and Grand Canyon in that time. Since then it’s been a 2-2 stretch with wins over Seattle and Abilene Christian mixed with losses to Texas-Arlington and Cal Baptist. Over 30 games so far this year that gives the Texans a 12-18 overall record.
Matched up in the road rematch versus Cal Baptist on Thursday, the Texans opened the second half with a 36-28 deficit. Tarleton State was outscored 32-20 the rest of the way in a 68-48 blowout loss. Leading team scorer Dantwan Grimes came off the bench for 11 points, one rebound and one steal in 31 minutes. Keitenn Bristow doubled up on 10 points with 10 boards, two steals and two assists, while Bubu Benjamin chipped in 10 points with four rebounds in 35 minutes of action during the defeat.
Why the Tarleton State Texans will win
- Tarleton State has won each of its last eight Saturday home games against the Western Athletic Conference.
- Utah Valley has lost the first half in nine of its last 10 Saturday road games against Conference opponents.
Why the Utah Valley Wolverines will win
- Utah Valley has won 17 of its last 18 games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
Utah Valley vs Tarleton State Prediction
I’m staying with Utah Valley. The Wolverines rolled right past a middling Abilene Christian team in their last matchup, posting 46.3 percent from the field with a 49-36 rebounding advantage. Utah Valley held the Wildcats to just 33.8 percent shooting from the field but also coughed up a whopping 19 turnovers for 16 Abilene Christian points. Still, that makes seven straight wins for Utah Valley, with 70 or more points scored in six of those.
The last time these teams saw each other on February 8, Utah Valley secured a dominant win at home 81-56. The Wolverines will need to control their mistakes in the road rematch, but should also have the advantage in most facets.
