Texas Arlington Mavericks Betting Preview

The Mavericks have had a couple of good runs this year but overall it’s been a struggle in the record column and they’re currently sitting below the .500 mark. Texas Arlington kicked things off on a 7-7 run with losses to LA Tech, USC, Missouri State, Murray State, Rhode Island, Arkansas State, and Liberty. After four straight losses from there, the Mavericks hit a winning streak versus Seattle U, Abilene Christian, Southern Utah, and Utah Tech. Since then it’s been a rough 2-3 run, however. Texas Arlington has wins over Cal Baptist and Tarleton State in that time with losses versus Utah Valley, Seattle U, and Grand Canyon otherwise. That gives the Mavs a 13-14 overall run through 27 games so far this year.

In their Saturday matchup versus Tarleton State, the Mavericks were down 29-23 going into the second half. Texas Arlington stormed back on a 44-28 run and took the victory 67-57 in the end, though. Leading the team in scoring was Darius Burford with 13 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Brandyn Talbot added 12 points with one rebound and one assist, while Raysean Seamster had 11 points with two blocks in 24 minutes of work.

Grand Canyon Antelopes Betting Preview

Over on the Grand Canyon side, they’ve been doing well so far with only a couple instances of consecutive losses this year. Both occurred in the Lopes’ first 10 games, with the defeats coming versus Arizona State, UC Davis, Georgia, and LA Tech. An 11-1 run came next with a loss to Utah Valley among wins over Chicago State, Saint Louis, San Diego, Bryant, Southern Utah, Abilene Christian, Tarleton State, Southern Utah, Utah Tech, Seattle U, and Utah Valley, then a loss to Cal Baptist. Since then it’s been three straight wins over Tarleton State, Texas Arlington, and Cal Baptist, giving the Antelopes a 20-6 run through their first 26 outings.

Matched up against Cal Baptist in their home rematch on Saturday, Grand Canyon came out of the locker room with a 41-30 edge. The Antelopes were outscored 34-25 from there and had to hang on for the 66-64 win in the end. JaKobe Coles led the team with 18 points, three rebounds, and three steals. Ray Harrison was also in double-digits with 16 points and four rebounds, while Duke Brennan had eight points with 12 boards.

Why the Grand Canyon Antelopes will win

  • Grand Canyon has won each of its last 16 night games against the Western Athletic Conference at Global Credit Union Arena at GCU.
  • UT Arlington Mavericks has lost five of its last six road games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
  • UT Arlington Mavericks has lost the first half in seven of its last eight road games.

Why the UT Arlington Mavericks will win

  • UT Arlington Mavericks has won three of its last four night games against the Western Athletic Conference.

Texas Arlington vs Grand Canyon Prediction

I’ll lean toward Grand Canyon. You could argue against the Lopes, however, as they had a rough time taking out a middling Cal Baptist team in their last outing. GCU didn’t shoot terribly (42.1 percent) and had a 33-25 rebounding edge, but also coughed up 17 turnovers for 18 Lancers points. That gives the Antelopes fewer than 67 points in two of the last three games, but they’ve managed to win all three.

The last time these teams met up on February 15, GCU secured an 82-75 road win. The Antelopes had 12 turnovers for 15 points in that one and didn’t really get going until the second half. I’d like to see a more complete effort in the home rematch.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Grand Canyon Antelopes -12
