UMass Lowell River Hawks Betting Preview

The River Hawks started out the season on a pretty nice run, but they’ve been sketchy in the win column lately. UMass Lowell went 5-4 over their first nine games, taking wins over Rivier, Saint Peter’s, Fisher College, Quinnipiac, and Merrimack in that time. A win streak over UMass, Long Island U, Dartmouth, Stonehill, Boston U, Emerson, and Albany came next, then a 3-4 run over the next seven games. Those wins came courtesy of NJIT, New Hampshire, and UMBC. Otherwise, it was losses to Vermont, Bryant, Maine, and NJIT. The result in the record column so far has been a 15-8 overall run for the River Hawks through their first 23 games of the year.

In the UMBC matchup on Saturday, the River Hawks were looking good after the first half with a 46-36 advantage. UMass Lowell kept it up in the second on a 37-31 run and took the victory in the end 83-67. Tops in scoring was Quinton Mincey with 26 points, 17 rebounds, and four assists, while Yuri Covington added 16 points with four rebounds and four assists. Max Brooks had 17 points with five rebounds and Martin Somerville had 15 bench points in the win.

Binghamton Bearcats Betting Preview

Over on the Binghamton side, they had a nice run going in December but other than that it’s been a struggle in the win column so far. The Bearcats lost six of their first eight games versus Penn State, Miami, Fordham, Longwood, Central Connecticut, and Niagara. A 7-1 run came next with wins over Long Island U, Lafayette, Le Moyne, Lancaster Bible College, Mercyhurst, Army, and UMBC (with a loss to Marist). Following losses to Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Albany, and Bryant in the next five, the Bearcats took out Vermont and Albany in the next two games. That gives Binghamton an 11-12 overall record through 23 games so far.

In the Albany game on Saturday, the Bearcats were up 36-26 going into the second half. Binghamton was outscored 35-29 the rest of the way but held on for the win in the end 65-61. Nehemiah Benson put up 16 points with two rebounds and two assists along the way, and Gavin Walsh doubled up with his 15 points and 15 rebounds. Tymu Chenery added 12 points with six rebounds and four assists, while Wes Peterson had 11 points and five boards.

Why the Binghamton Bearcats will win

  • Binghamton has won each of its last six games at Dr. Bai Lee Court at Events Center following a road win.
  • UMass Lowell has lost four of its last five night games against Conference opponents.
  • UMass Lowell has lost the first half in six of its last eight road games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Why the UMass Lowell River Hawks will win

  • UMass Lowell has won each of its last three games against Binghamton.

UMass Lowell vs Binghamton Prediction

I’ll just stay with UMass Lowell here. The River Hawks took care of a middling UMBC team in their last outing, hitting 54.2 percent from the field with a 38-27 rebounding advantage along the way. UMass Lowell did cough up 13 turnovers for 13 Retrievers points in an overall sloppy game (29 total turnovers) but that was just about the only major blemish. The River Hawks have scored well lately with 83 or more points in three of the last four. The trouble is, UMass Lowell is also giving up quite a bit on the other side.

That said, Binghamton has been below 70 points in four of their last five games, so I’m not sure the Bearcats will have the offensive firepower to get into cover territory here.

Andrew Jett's Pick: UMass Lowell River Hawks -5
