VCU Rams Betting Preview

The VCU Rams enter Saturday’s contest with a 25–7 overall record, including a 15–3 mark in conference play and a 7-3 record on the road. The Rams have compiled recent wins over George Washington, Richmond and Dayton, while dropping games to George Mason, North Carolina State and the Utah State Aggies.

It should also be noted that these two teams met earlier this season. Who won? Who played well in the game? In the VCU Rams 79-72 victory over the Saint Joseph’s Hawks two months ago, VCU guard Brandon Jennings amassed 18 points (6 of 12 shooting from the field: 4 of 4 shooting from three-point range), 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks and 1 steal.

The VCU Rams are averaging 82.4 points (35th in country) on 46.2 percent shooting from the field and 36.4 percent shooting three-point range per game. Shifting our focus to the defensive side of the basketball, the Rams are allowing opponents 72.2 points per contest.

Sophomore guard Terrence Hill Jr. leads the VCU Rams averaging 14.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game on 45 percent shooting from the field per game. Junior forward Lazar Djokovic contributes 13.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.3 blocks per contest. Senior guard Jadrian Tracey averages 10.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists on 42 percent shooting from the field per contest providing the Rams with further backcourt stability.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawks enter Saturday’s contest with a 22–10 record, including a 13–5 mark in conference play and a 6-7 record on the road. Saint Joseph’s has compiled wins over Dayton, Loyola Chicago, Rhode Island and George Mason, while losing recent games to VCU, Fordham and the Temple Owls.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawks average 72.3 points on 42.4 percent shooting from the field and 30.5 percent shooting from three‑point range per game. Defensively, the Hawks are allowing opponents 70.5 points per contest which ranks 65th in the country.

Why the Saint Joseph’s Hawks Will Win

• Defensive edge. The Saint Joseph’s Hawks are allowing opponents 70.5 points per contest which ranks 65th in the country.

VCU Rams vs. Saint Joseph’s Hawks Prediction

In my view, VCU’s edge in this matchup comes from the Rams ability to steadily widen the gap through control rather than volatility. Quite simply, the Rams ability to dictate pace is rather effective. The Saint Joseph’s Hawks rely too much on rhythm and perimeter shooting which is concerning in a tournament setting. I see the VCU Rams pulling away late and winning this game rather easily. With that said, I am backing the VCU Rams to cover the 7.5 points in this game.

Hans Geevers's Pick: VCU -7.5
