Southern Jaguars Betting Preview

Southern was able to open the season on a .500 clip, but they took a couple of losses in their first two games. The opener was a 109-77 blowout versus Arkansas, then came a 100-82 loss to Marquette. In the loss to the Golden Eagles, both Malek Abdelgowad (11 points; 10 rebounds) and Michael Jacobs (21 points; 10 rebounds) managed double-doubles. Game three was Southern’s first victory of the year, coming against Ecclesia College. After 55 points in the first half, the Jags closed on a 60-32 run for a 115-51 finish. Malek Abdelgowad topped the team on 19 points and nine boards. In game four Southern notched another win, this time 129-64 versus Champion Christian. Michael Jacobs led the way this time with his 26 points, three assists and one rebound in 19 minutes of work.

On Tuesday versus Washington, the Jaguars were up 37-29 at the break and fought through two overtimes but eventually lost 99-93. Tops in scoring was Michael Jacobs with 24 points and six rebounds. Cam Amboree had 18 points with nine assists and three rebounds.

San Jose State Spartans Betting Preview

Over on the San Jose State side, they kicked off their year with a game versus Utah. In that matchup the Spartans were trailing by a score of 44-38 by halftime and ended up losing it 84-75. Leading the way was Colby Garland with 21 points, four assists and three rebounds while Yaphet Moundi had a double-double on 12 points and 13 boards. JaVaughn Hannah also reached double-digits with 12 points, two rebounds and one assist in 32 minutes. San Jose State took on UC Santa Barbara in game two. The Spartans were trailing 45-28 by halftime and ended up falling 85-74. Leading the way in scoring during the losing effort was Colby Garland with 30 points, four assists and three rebounds. Ben Roseborough put up 12 points and four rebounds, while Melvin Bell had 12 points with five rebounds.

The Spartans were finally able to get a win on Monday versus Bethesda. After jumping out to a 54-24 halftime edge, San Jose State scored another 56 points in a 110-56 outcome. Tops on the team was Colby Garland with 17 points, six assists and five rebounds. Yaphet Moundi had a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Marcus Overstreet also doubled on 14 points and 13 rebounds in 16 minutes for the Spartans during the victory at Event Center Arena.

Southern vs San Jose State Prediction

I’ll lean toward trying San Jose State in this one but I’m probably avoiding it entirely. The Spartans looked pretty good in their first win versus an overmatched Bethesda team, shooting 65.2 percent from the field and 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from outside along with a 52-13 advantage on the boards and a 60-18 edge on points in the paint. The Spartans still have a few things to clean up, like the 12-of-22 (54.5 percent) from the line and the 13 turnovers, however. Still, it was nice for the Spartans to get a victory after some tough matchups in their opening quartet. It’s anyone’s guess how they’ll follow it up here, though.

Andrew Jett's Pick: San Jose State Spartans -4.5
