A summary that ties it all together and produces a favorable betting outcome for the Southeastern Louisiana vs Ole Miss game
In last year’s preseason coaches’ poll, the Lions were picked to finish way down in sixth place among the Southland Conference. That prediction proved to be true, as Southeastern Louisiana finished with an 18-14 overall record and a 12-8 run in the conference, putting them behind McNeese, Lamar, Nicholls, Northwestern State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the standings at season’s end. The Lions skidded into the finish line with a 1-4 run over their final five regular-season outings, then took a four-point overtime loss to Incarnate Word in the first round of the Southland Tournament.
Moving ahead to the 2025-26 campaign, the Lions will be without three of their biggest contributors from last season. That trio includes Sam Hines (16.7 PPG) and Jakevion Buckley (14.5 PPG) along with big man Brody Rowbury (8.6 PPG). The team will return two starters and three reserves in head coach David Kiefer’s seventh season though. Southland Freshman of the year Jeremy Elyzee (10.4 PPG) is back after starting all 31 appearances and scoring 20 points three times alongside three double-doubles.
Over on the Ole Miss side, they took a jump forward following their 20-12 run in 2023-24, going 24-12 overall last season. The Rebels posted a 1-8 run in a crowded and very talented SEC, which put the team behind Auburn, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Kentucky and Missouri—all of whom were ranked nationally except for Missouri. Ole Miss beat Arkansas in the SEC Tournament before a quarterfinals loss to Auburn, then took out North Carolina and Iowa State on the way to a Sweet Sixteen loss to Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament.
This year Ole Miss will start nearly from scratch. Just two players who had significant court time are back with the team along with one redshirt freshman. There will be plenty of new faces in head coach Chris Beard’s third year at the helm. Senior Malik Dia (10.8 PPG) started every game last year as a junior and should continue to contribute heavily in the absence of playmakers like Jaemyn Brakefield and Sean Pedulla.
Ole Miss has won each of its last 14 games against non-Conference opponents at The Sandy and John Black Pavilion at Ole Miss.
Southeastern Louisiana has lost each of its last four games.
Ole Miss has won the first half in 12 of its last 13 night games against non-Conference opponents.
Southeastern Louisiana has won six of its last eight road games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
Ole Miss ranked 5th among Division 1 teams for turnover percentage last season (11.5%).
Ole Miss ranked 7th for steals per game (8.3) in last season’s NCAA Tournament.
I’m going to take a stab on Southeastern Louisiana, but you could make a case either way. The Lions retain a pretty solid core group of talent heading into the 2025-26 season, with Elyzee leading the way. Look for him to garner plenty of conversation for potential all-league honors as Southeastern Louisiana looks to take a step forward in the Southland standings. The team is pretty well-balanced overall, and this opener will serve as a stout test for their chemistry in the early-going. I like the Lions to rise to the occasion—relatively speaking, of course.
As for the Rebels, they’re going to be good again this season—though exactly how good remains to be seen. Beard seems to have reloaded the roster quite well and they’ve got nice depth across the board. Ole Miss should be in the running for another NCAA Tournament berth by season’s end. Cover-wise I like the Lions a little better here, though.
