South Carolina Gamecocks Betting Preview

By early January of this season, the Gamecocks weren’t looking too bad. They were 10-5 through the first 15 games, taking losses to Butler, Northwestern, Virginia Tech, Clemson and Vanderbilt in that time. The next seven were a 1-6 stretch with losses to Georgia, Arkansas, Auburn, Texas A&M, Florida and LSU, however. In 22 games this year that gives the Gamecocks an 11-11 run.

In the LSU matchup on Saturday the Gamecocks went into the second half with a one-point deficit 35-35. South Carolina evened it up on a 43-42 run to force overtime. Following the extra period however, the Gamecocks ended up with a tough home loss 92-87. Meechie Johnson topped the team on 21 points with six assists and five rebounds. Kobe Knox added 15 points as well.

Texas Longhorns Betting Preview

Over on the Texas side, they were sitting at 11-6 over their first 17 games of the season. Those losses came courtesy of Duke, Arizona State, Virginia, UConn, Mississippi State and Tennessee. A 2-3 stretch came next with losses to Texas A&M, Kentucky and Auburn alongside wins over Georgia and Oklahoma. In 22 games this year that gives the Longhorns a 13-9 record in the books.

Matched up against Oklahoma over the weekend the Longhorns were sitting on a three-point deficit 33-30. Texas got better in the second half on a 49-36 advantage and ended up powering out the victory on the road in the end 79-69. Dailyn Swain doubled up on 18 points with 10 rebounds and six assists, while Matas Vokietaitis added 14 points with six rebounds in the win.

South Carolina vs Texas Prediction

I’ll stick with Texas but this one’s a coin flip. The Longhorns started a bit slowly in the first half during their win over Oklahoma on Saturday but eventually made it a double-digit finish. Texas shot an excellent 60 percent from the field and 73.3 percent (11-of-15) at the line in that one alongside a 42-28 edge on points in the paint, but the 13 turnovers didn’t help matters. The Longhorns have won two of the last three games, scoring 79 or more points in all three of those outings.

As for South Carolina, they shot a tepid 40.6 percent from the field with a 34-27 rebounding deficit in their latest home loss to LSU. The Gamecocks gave up 51.7 percent shooting from the field on defense as well. South Carolina is just 1-6 in their last seven games but to be fair they’ve played some top-shelf teams in that time. The Gamecocks have given up 92 or more points in three straight games though (with one OT finish in there) so Texas shouldn’t have much trouble scoring in this one.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Texas Longhorns -11.5
