Sam Houston State Bearkats Betting Preview

Sam Houston State has been pretty inactive compared to a lot of basketball teams so far this year. The Bearkats have just two games in the books so far, winning one and losing the other. The victory came last Monday in the opener versus LeTourneau. Sam Houston State was up by 10 points at halftime in that one, then cruised to a 95-59 blowout win on a 55-29 second half. The Bearkats’ leading scorer was Jacobe Coleman on 17 points and five rebounds in 19 minutes. Jacob Walker added 13 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Damon Nicholas had 12 points with six rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes during the victory effort.

In game two Sam Houston State had a tricky matchup versus a very tough Texas Tech squad. The Bearkats were down by 10 at the break and didn’t get any closer on a 51-40 second half in a 98-77 loss. Justin Begg led the way with 17 points, five rebounds and two assists in the losing effort, and Kashie Natt doubled up on 16 points and 11 rebounds in 23 minutes. Veljko Ilic was also in double-digits with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Bearkats.

Utah Utes Betting Preview

Over on the Utah side, they’ve got three games in the books so far this year. The first came last Monday versus San Jose State. Utah was up 44-38 at the half and scored 40 more points from there in an 84-75 win. Seydou Traore was tops on the team with 23 points and three assists, and both Terrence Brown (eight assists) and Keanu Dawes (nine rebounds) finished with 12 points apiece. Game two was another win for the Utes, but this one was close. It came versus Weber State, and took overtime to finish off a 92-89 comeback win. Terrence Brown had 36 points with four rebounds and three assists, while Don McHenry added 26 points with six rebounds. Keanu Dawes doubled up with 11 points, 14 rebounds and five assists as well.

In game three versus Holy Cross on Monday, the Utes had another easy game. Utah was up 48-34 by halftime and ended up winning 87-69. Terrence Brown had 21 points and three boards this time, and Keanu Dawes put up 14 points, nine rebounds and two assists in 31 minutes. Don McHenry chipped in 12 points with four rebounds in 28 minutes.

Sam Houston State vs Utah Prediction

I’ll take a stab on Sam Houston State here. The Bearkats didn’t play too badly versus a great Texas Tech team in their last outing; they just couldn’t keep up with the 50 percent shooting from the opposition. Sam Houston shot 43.1 percent themselves and had a 36-30 advantage on points in the paint. The fouls (29) added up though, and the 13 turnovers didn’t help matters. Still, that makes 172 points in just two games combined for the Bearkats so far.

As for Utah, they made short work of Holy Cross in their last game thanks to 53.3 percent shooting, a 40-26 rebounding advantage and just six turnovers. Utah showed some potential weaknesses in their OT win over Weber State, so if Sam Houston can put together a good overall effort I think the Bearkats can cover Saturday.
