Saint Peter’s Peacocks Betting Preview

The Peacocks have really only had one decent run so far this year. Otherwise, it’s been a struggle. Saint Peter’s lost to Seton Hall, UMass Lowell, and Rutgers in their first three, then beat UMBC, Saint Elizabeth, and Fairleigh Dickinson in the next four. The next 11 outings were a 3-8 run featuring wins over Delaware, Canisius, and Sacred Heart. The losses otherwise were versus Quinnipiac, Niagara, Marist, Merrimack, Rider, and Mount St. Mary’s. The result over the first 18 games for the Peacocks was a pretty meager 7-11 overall record.

On Thursday versus Siena, the Peacocks were blitzed in the first half 40-24. Saint Peter’s got better from there on a 39-37 second-half run but still lost by double-digits 77-63 in the end. Tops in scoring during the losing effort was Marcus Randolph with 19 points and four boards. Bryce Eaton came off the bench for 15 points and two steals as well.

Manhattan Jaspers Betting Preview

Over on the Manhattan side, they went 3-4 over their first seven games, taking wins over Mercy, Fordham, and Army with losses to Maryland, Fairleigh Dickinson, Virginia, and Le Moyne otherwise. The Jaspers hit a 4-2 run after that with losses to Marist and Siena among wins over Saint Peter’s, Wagner, Presbyterian, and Rider. Since then it’s been another 3-4 stretch with wins over Niagara, Mount St. Mary’s, and Iona. The losses in that time have come versus Mount St. Mary’s, Merrimack, Fairfield, and Sacred Heart, giving the Jaspers an even 10-10 record across their first 20 games of the year so far.

Matched up against Sacred Heart back on Sunday, the Jaspers kicked off the first half with a 33-31 deficit. Manhattan finished off on a 41-41 run and took a tough road loss 74-72 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Devin Dinkins with 24 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 30 minutes off the bench. Shaquil Bender led the starters with 16 points, three boards, two assists, and a steal. Will Snydor chipped in with eight options and 14 rebounds, while Masiah Gilyard had 14 rebounds, three points, and three steals.

Why the Manhattan Jaspers will win

  • Saint Peter’s has lost each of its last four games against the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
  • Manhattan has won four of its last five home games following a road loss.
  • Saint Peter’s has lost the first half in each of its last three games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Why the Saint Peter’s Peacocks will win

  • Manhattan has lost six of its last seven day games against the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference at Draddy Gymnasium.
  • Saint Peter’s has won seven of its last nine road day games against the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
  • Saint Peter’s has won the first half in five of its last six day games against Manhattan.

Saint Peter’s vs Manhattan Prediction

I’ll stick with Manhattan. The Jaspers didn’t play great in their last outing versus a middling Sacred Heart team though, so they’ll need a good bounce-back effort here. Manhattan shot a rough 35.2 percent from the field in that one and posted 12 turnovers for 11 Pioneers points. The rebounding (49) was pretty solid, though. The Jaspers are scoring well during this 3-2 run with 72 or more points in each outing, but they’ve given up a couple of fairly big totals on the other side in their two losses, though.

These teams saw each other back on December 6 in a 70-67 road win for the Jaspers. Manhattan didn’t shoot great in that one (40.3 percent) and went just 19.2 percent (5-of-26) from 3-point range. The Peacocks were even worse offensively though, posting only 34.3 percent from the field themselves. I’d like to see a higher shooting percentage here but Manhattan should be okay in the home rematch.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Manhattan Jaspers -3.5
