When these two teams faced off in January, Purdue secured the 68-50 victory.

Purdue Can’t Slip Up

Right now Purdue is playing for seeding, and a loss here could hurt them when the NCAA tournament rolls around. In the last game, Purdue faced against UCLA, scoring 76 points on the way to a comfortable victory. Purdue scored 39 points in the second half, which was the difference. Purdue shot 51.9 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the three-point line. Trey Kaufmann-Renn put up 29 points and three rebounds. Braden Smith is also having a huge year; he put up 23 points, eight assists, and three rebounds.

Purdue sits with a 20-9 record overall, and they have gone 16-13 against the spread. Purdue’s defense has been a significant problem all season, but the offense has been good, and they are averaging 77.4 points while their defense is giving up 70 points per game. The offense is ranked 88th, and they must push the pace again here. In the first game against Rutgers, it was the defense, but I have a hunch the offense is going to need to be better. Trey Kaufman-Renn is averaging 19.6 points while shooting 61 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from deep.

What Has Gone Wrong for Rutgers?

Everything has gone wrong for Rutgers this season, and after such a highly touted recruiting class and so much hype going into the season, they have struggled. In the last game against Michigan, Rutgers was up 57-49, and it looked like they were finally going to pick up a marquee win; in the second half, though they struggled again, they ended up losing by two points. Dylan Harper had a strong game, putting up 17 points, four rebounds, and one assist. Four different players put up at least 13 points.

Rutgers has a 14-15 record overall, and they have gone 14-14-1 against the spread. Away from home this season they sit with a 3-7 record overall. Rutgers’s offense has been good, but the defense has been a significant issue giving up 76.5 points per game. The offense averages 76.9 points per game, but in this game, the defense will need to be a whole lot better. Dylan Harper has been this team’s top player, averaging 19.3 points while shooting 46.9 percent from the field.

Rutgers vs Purdue Prediction

The first game between these two teams was lower scoring, but this game will be a lot different. Rutgers’s offense struggled, but don’t let that fool you, they are still a good offensive team, it’s been the defense that has been a major issue. They are averaging 76.9 points per game, and they will go well over their season average here. Purdue averages 77.4 points, and the Rutgers defense has had issues slowing down all teams this season. The over is 7-1 in the Boilermakers’ last eight games as a favorite. Back the over to cash here.
