Over on the Southern side, they lost their first two games versus Arkansas and Marquette, but then beat Ecclesia, Champion Christian, Northwestern State and Louisiana Christian over the next four outings. Southern would hit a losing streak versus Texas, Texas State, Cal Baptist, Baylor and Illinois in the next five games though, giving the team a 4-9 overall record through the first 13 outings.
Matched up against Texas Southern in Saturday’s game, the Jags were up 42-29 by the start of the second half. Southern scored another 42 points from there and powered out an 84-73 win in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Michael Jacobs with 27 points, six boards and six assists. Malek Abdelgowad was also in double-digits with 20 points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes of work during the win.

I’ll lean toward Southern. There’s not a lot to get excited about here if you’re not a fan of either team, but it should at least be a competitive game. The Jags played pretty well against Texas Southern in their last game, shooting 50.9 percent from the field with 33 rebounds and 38 points in the paint. The free throws (61.8 percent on 21-of-34) and turnovers (12) could have been a bit better but otherwise there’s not much to complain about. Southern had lost five straight with fewer than 70 points in four of those games prior to that victory, so it was much-needed.
As for Prairie View, they shot just 38.6 percent from the field with 16 turnovers and a 33-30 rebounding deficit in their latest loss to Grambling. The Panthers have lost three straight games now but they’ve scored 72 or more points in all of those. Southern is going to have to hit the gas on offense in this one.
