Prairie View hit the gas in the second half on a 41-31 run and eventually took the win at home 73-61. Cory Wells topped the team with a double-double on 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Dontae Horne added 18 points with four rebounds in 26 minutes of work.

Over on the Jackson State side, they opened the year on a rough run, losing each of their first six games before finally coming away with a win over Louisiana on November 28. The Tigers would lose another six straight games after that however, leaving them at just 1-12 to start the year. Since then it’s been wins over Alcorn State and Alabama State before another loss to Alabama A&M, however.
In the Alabama A&M game back on Monday the Tigers went into the second half with a 40-36 edge. Jackson State was outpaced 64-51 the rest of the way however, and ended up with a road loss 100-91 in the end. Daeshun Ruffin went off for 39 points, 10 assists and three rebounds during the losing effort. Tamarion Hoover added 15 points and four rebounds in 28 minutes as well.

I’ll stay with Prairie View. Probably not touching this one though. The Panthers beat a struggling AR-Pine Bluff team in a home matchup this week thanks to a 41-32 rebounding edge and just five turnovers. Prairie View allowed just 33.3 percent shooting from the floor and hit 42.9 percent on the other side themselves. The 61.3 percent from the line (19-of-31) could have been better, though. The Panthers have now won three straight games, scoring 70 or more points in each of those victories.
As for Jackson State, they lost the handle in the second half of their latest road loss to Alabama A&M. The Tigers ended up shooting 44.4 percent from the field with a 37-29 rebounding deficit and a 36-28 disadvantage on points in the paint. Jackson State has scored 72 or more points in five of the last six outings, so we could have a decent total in this one.
