The Pittsburgh Panthers and the Penn State Nittany Lions will meet Sunday night in a college basketball matchup at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania. Let’s take a look at this game from a betting perspective.

Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Penn State Nittany Lions Prediction

In my view, this matchup favors the Pittsburgh Panthers. Why? While both teams struggled last season, Pittsburgh has looked like the more complete team through the first two games of the 2026 campaign.

The Panthers enter this matchup with a 2-0 record, including an impressive 80-61 victory over Buffalo earlier this week. Through two contests, Pittsburgh is averaging 87.5 points per game while allowing just 59 points per contest which ranks 41st in the nation.

Penn State has also opened the season with a 2-0 record and is averaging a robust 97 points per game, which ranks 26th in the country. However, the Nittany Lions allowed a massive 93 points in the team’s most recent outing, a 97-93 victory over Chattanooga.

Looking back at last season, neither team was particularly successful. Penn State finished 12-20 overall and just 3-17 in Big Ten play, while Pittsburgh posted a 13-20 record and a 5-13 mark in ACC action. While Penn State owns the home court advantage, I prefer the defensive profile Pittsburgh has displayed early in the season. For the reasons just noted, I am backing the Pittsburgh Panthers to cover the 2.5 points in this game.

Pittsburgh Panthers Betting Preview

The Pittsburgh Panthers enter Sunday night’s matchup after posting a 13-20 overall record (10-7 home record and 5-13 ACC Conference record) last season. The Panthers struggled throughout conference play and found it difficult to consistently compete against the higher quality competition.

Turning our attention to this season, Pittsburgh has opened the 2026 campaign with a 2-0 record, including a dominant 80-61 victory over Buffalo earlier this week.

In two games played this season, the Pittsburgh Panthers are averaging 87.5 points per game while allowing only 59 points per contest which ranks 41st in the nation. What did we learn from the data just presented? Pittsburgh has shown a balanced approach early in the season, pairing efficient offense with strong defensive play.

Penn State Nittany Lions Betting Preview

The Penn State Nittany Lions enter Sunday night’s contest after posting a 12-20 overall record (9-8 home record, 2-9 road record and 3-17 Big Ten Conference record) last season. The Nittany Lions endured a difficult season in one of the toughest conferences in the nation.

The good news for Penn State is the team’s fast start to the new season. The Nittany Lions have opened the 2026 campaign with a 2-0 record, including a convincing 97-57 victory over Canisius five days ago.

In two games played this season, the Penn State Nittany Lions are averaging 97 points per game, which ranks 26th nationally, while allowing 75 points per contest. Penn State’s offense has been explosive, but defensive consistency remains a concern.

Why the Pittsburgh Panthers Will Win

• Strong defensive play. Pittsburgh is allowing just 59 points per game this season.

• Momentum. The Pittsburgh Panthers enter this contest with a 2-0 win-loss record.

• Recent performance. Pittsburgh defeated Buffalo 80-61 earlier this week.

• Defensive edge. Through two games, the Panthers have been considerably better defensively than Penn State.

Why the Penn State Nittany Lions Will Win

• Home-court advantage. Penn State posted a 9-8 home record last season.

• Offensive production. The Nittany Lions are averaging 97 points per game this season.

• Fast start. Penn State enters the game with a 2-0 record.

• Confidence. The Penn State Nittany Lions have shown significant offensive improvement compared to last season.

Hans Geevers's Pick: Pittsburgh -2.5
