Mercyhurst Lakers Betting Preview

The Lakers opened up the season above .500 across their first five outings, but they’ve fallen back below that mark since then. Mercyhurst lost versus Northwestern in their opener, then took out Loyola Chicago and Penn State-New Kensington before another loss to Canisius. After a win over Morgan State, the Lakers have since dropped a pair of consecutive outings versus Miami-OH and Marshall. That gives the Lakers a 3-4 record overall this year.

In the matchup last Sunday versus Marshall, the Lakers were down by four points heading into the second half. Mercyhurst didn’t end up getting any closer than that, falling 69-60 in the end. Tops in scoring was Jake Lemelman with 21 points and five rebounds. Qadir Martin added 10 points with nine boards, while both Bernie Blunt (three rebounds) and Deshaun Jackson (four rebounds) hit the 10-point mark as well.

West Virginia Mountaineers Betting Preview

Over on the West Virginia side, they opened the year on a nice win streak but they’ve since lost a couple of games. The Mountaineers went 5-0 to start the season, taking out Mount St. Mary’s, Campbell, Lehigh, Pitt and Lafayette in that time. West Virginia has since lost a pair of games though, dropping to Clemson and Xavier to give the team a 5-2 record overall this season through seven games.

Last weekend in the Xavier game, the Mountaineers kicked off the first half on a 36-28 deficit. West Virginia hit a 42-40 disadvantage in the second half for a 78-68 loss in the end. Tops in scoring was Treysen Eaglestaff with 20 points, four assists and five rebounds in the losing effort. Honor Huff added 16 points in 35 minutes and Brenen Lorient had 11 points with three rebounds and one assist for the Mountaineers.

Mercyhurst vs West Virginia Prediction

I may take a stab on Mercyhurst here. The Lakers were able to keep reasonably close to a pretty good Marshall team in their last outing, but there are plenty of areas to improve. Mercyhurst shot a tepid 40 percent from the field with a rough 3-of-16 (18.8 percent) from outside and 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) from the line in the defeat—not to mention the 36-29 deficit on the boards. That said, Mercyhurst had a 34-18 advantage in the paint and turned the ball over just nine times in the loss. The Lakers have been below 61 points in two of the last four games, so the shooting has to get better.

As for WVU, they didn’t shoot very well from outside (6-of-22 for 27.3 percent) in their latest loss to Xavier but didn’t perform too badly otherwise. The Mountaineers have been below 69 points in consecutive games now (both losses), so hitting that 70-point mark should be a priority here. I think the Lakers can hang around well enough to cover though, provided Mercyhurst plays to their capabilities.
