We’ll tie it all together with a summary that produces a favorable betting outcome for this game.

Maine Black Bears Betting Preview

Maine made some major improvements last season following a 15-17 run in 2023-24. The Black Bears ended up going 20-14 overall last year, with a respectable 10-6 run in the America East. Maine would finish behind only Bryant and Vermont in the standings with that effort. After a rough 2-4 run to finish off the season (beating only New Hampshire and UMass Lowell), the Bears took out UMass Lowell and Vermont on the way to the championship game. After a 77-59 loss to Bryant however, Maine’s season was over on March 15.

This year Maine opened up with a matchup on the road versus George Washington. The Bears were only down by four points at the break, then got blitzed 38-22 the rest of the way for a blowout loss 67-47. Leading team scorer TJ Biel had 13 points with seven rebounds in 31 minutes of work. The only other player on the team to finish in double-figures during the road loss was Ace Flagg with 10 points, three rebounds and one assist in 29 minutes on the floor.

Stony Brook Seawolves Betting Preview

Over on the Stony Brook side, they reached some reasonably lofty heights in 2023-24 with a 20-15 overall run and a CAA Tournament championship game appearance. The Seawolves fell back significantly with an 8-24 run last year however, going only 4-14 in the conference. Stony Brook landed ahead of only North Carolina A&T with that effort. The good news is that the Seawolves beat Hofstra and Elon in their final two regular-season games. The bad news is that they fell to Delaware in the first round of the CAA Tournament on March 7 to end their year.

Matched up against Farmingdale State in their opener on Monday, the Seawolves took an eight-point edge into the second half. After a one-point deficit from there, Stony Brook emerged with a 66-59 win. Topping the scorers was Andrej Shoshkikj with 20 points and four rebounds in 26 minutes. Richard Goods added 10 points with seven boards, and Quin Gorman had nine points with nine rebounds over 22 minutes in the win.

Maine vs Stony Brook Prediction

I’ll lean toward Stony Brook but I’m probably not touching this one. There’s not a lot to get excited about here, even in the early-going. Neither team looked great in their openers. Stony Brook shot just 34.3 percent from the field and shot 61.9 percent (13-of-21) versus Farmingdale State, not to mention a very modest rebounding (46-44) and points in the paint (32-28) edge. The stats simply don’t inspire a ton of confidence.

As for Maine, they shot just 31.4 percent from the field with a 43-21 rebounding deficit and 14 turnovers against George Washington. The Bears got blasted in the paint 48-18 and had just eight assists along the way. The Revolutionaries won fairly comfortably, even with an ugly 2-of-20 (10 percent) from 3-point range. All things considered, this Saturday’s game should be a fairly balanced matchup. I like Stony Brook to eke out a cover but I’m likely not going anywhere near it. It might be an engaging game to watch if you’re looking for competition, though.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Stony Brook Seawolves -5
