Illinois Fighting Illini Betting Preview
The Illini got through their first 23 games this year on a nice 20-3 clip, but then hit a rough 2-4 run. The losses in that time were versus Michigan State, Wisconsin, UCLA and Michigan. After wins over Oregon and Maryland followed by a Big Ten Tournament loss to Wisconsin, the Illini have since beaten Penn and VCU in the first two rounds of the national tournament for a 26-8 overall record.
In the Saturday matchup with VCU, the Illini held a fairly modest seven-point edge in the locker room at the break. Illinois turned it on in the second half with a 41-27 run and eventually powered out a sizable win 76-55. Leading team scorer Andrej Stojakovic had 21 points with four boards while both Tomislav Ivisic (11 rebounds) and Keaton Wagler (five rebounds) added 14 points apiece.
Houston Cougars Betting Preview
Over on the Houston side, they were on a nice 23-2 opening run through their first 25 outings this year. The Cougars lost to Iowa State, Arizona and Kansas in the next three then beat Colorado, Baylor, Oklahoma State, BYU and Kansas ahead of a conference tournament loss versus Arizona. Houston has beaten Idaho and Texas A&M in their national tournament run so far.
Matched up against Texas A&M in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday the Cougars were sitting pretty as they came back out onto the floor in the second half on a 46-28 advantage. Houston finished on a 42-29 run the rest of the way and took the victory in the end 88-57. Leading the team in scoring was Emanuel Sharp with 18 points and four rebounds.

Illinois vs Houston Prediction
I’ll stay with Houston. The Cougars have been quite impressive in the two games of this tournament so far, and they’re essentially playing a home game here. Houston demolished Texas A&M in their last outing thanks to a 42-27 rebounding edge, a 32-20 advantage in the paint and just 34.6 percent shooting allowed on defense. The Cougars are 7-1 in their last eight outings with a nice 69 or more points scored in every one of those games.
As for Illinois, they had a great second half against a plucky VCU team, eventually shooting 48.3 percent from the field with 34.8 percent allowed on defense. The Illini added a 40-26 edge on rebounding but did miss a few free throws on 64.7 percent (11-of-17) and had 11 turnovers.
Illinois has rolled through their two games pretty easily during this tournament as well, however the ghost of a second-half breakdown in the Big Ten Tournament loss to Wisconsin looms large.
