A summary that ties it all together and produces a favorable betting outcome for the Fairleigh Dickinson vs Iowa State game
Although the Knights were predicted to finish third in the conference last season in the coaches’ poll, they ended up underperforming quite a bit. Fairleigh Dickinson limped to a 13-20 overall record in 2024-25, going a tepid 8-8 in Northeast Conference games. That effort would lead the Knights to finish fifth behind Central Connecticut, LIU, Mercyhurst and Saint Francis in the standings. Fairleigh Dickinson had a rough finish to the regular season, going 1-4 over their last five games with losses to LIU, Mercyhurst, Saint Francis and LIU again. Following a win over Stonehill in the first game of the NEC Tournament, the Knights’ season ended with an overtime loss to Central Connecticut on March 8.
After that frustrating season, head coach Jack Castleberry is back for his third year at the helm. He’ll have to retool the roster quite a bit, as Fairleigh Dickinson doesn’t retain any starters from that 13-20 campaign. The exodus includes the Knights’ top eight scorers either graduating or transferring out, leading to just three percent of the team’s scoring returning. The team will bring in an intriguing set of headlining transfers though, namely Joey Niesman (12.4 PPG), Arthur Cox (11.7 PPG), Taeshaud Jackson (1.5 PPG) and Cyril Martynov (2.3 PPG).
Over on the Iowa State side, they’re coming off a pretty good run last year and will be looking to continue their solid play. The Cyclones posted a 25-10 record in 2024-25 with a 13-7 run in the Big 12. That would put the team behind only Houston, Texas Tech, Arizona and BYU in the standings. Iowa State lost to BYU in their second game of the conference tournament, then earned a berth in the national tourney. The Cyclones took out Lipscomb in the First Round, then fell to Ole Miss on March 23 to put a cap on the season.
Looking ahead to 2025-26, the Cyclones will once again be under the tutelage of TJ Otzelberger in his fifth year. He’ll have some holes to replace, as big contributors from last season Curtis Jones, Keshon Gilbert and Dishon Jackson have departed. That said, three starters and some key reserves have stuck around, leading most pundits to predict another healthy record for Iowa State this season.
Iowa State has won each of its last 16 night games against non-Conference opponents at James H. Hilton Coliseum.
Fairleigh Dickinson has lost each of its last 11 night games against non-Conference opponents.
Fairleigh Dickinson has lost the first half in nine of its last 10 night games against non-Conference opponents.
Fairleigh Dickinson has won six of its last eight night games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
Iowa State ranked T3rd for points in paint per game (42.0) in last season’s NCAA Tournament.
Iowa State ranked 4th for field goals made per game (31.0) in last season’s NCAA Tournament.
I’m going to take a stab on Fairleigh Dickinson. Probably not touching this one in reality, though. The Knights will look completely different in 2025-26, and it’ll likely take a while before we really know what we have in the team. That said, FDU does fill out some of their holes with steady, veteran presences who should be able to provide some consistency in the early-going. The Knights will be a bigger, more physical team this year, and that should translate into plenty of contested buckets. Whether or not they can keep pace on the offensive end remains to be seen, however.
As for Iowa State, there are tons of reasons for optimism heading into this year. The roster looks pretty darn great on paper and should be able to compete near the top of the Big 12 once again.
