Elon Phoenix Betting Preview

Elon’s first game this year was a pretty easy one as the team matched up at home versus Belmont Abbey College. The Phoenix didn’t have any issues in that one, jumping out to a 64-24 halftime edge on the way to a 35-27 second half and a 99-51 win in the end. Tops in scoring during the blowout was Chandler Cuthrell with 21 points and five rebounds while Ja’Juan Carr added 15 points with four rebounds and two assists. DeMarco Johnson put up 11 points with six assists and five rebounds in 24 minutes of action on the floor as well.

In game two versus UNC Greensboro on Saturday, the Phoenix got another win—but this one didn’t come easily. Elon scored 44 points in the first half, 42 in the second and six in overtime on the way to a 92-90 win in the end. Topping the scorers this time was Kacper Klaczek with 25 points and 13 rebounds alongside three assists. Chandler Cuthrell added 20 points with 10 rebounds for his own double-double, and Bryson Cokley had 11 points with four boards.

Marshall Thundering Herd Betting Preview

Over on the Marshall side, they had a competitive game in their opener last weekend as they took on UMass. The Herd posted a one-point edge in the first half then hit a 40-35 run in the second on the way to a 78-72 victory on the road. Leading the team in scoring was Wyatt Fricks with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Wilson Dubinsky added 12 points and nine boards while Caleb Hollenbeck had 12 points and two assists in 28 minutes. Noah Otshudi also finished in double-figures with 10 points, nine assists and five rebounds.

Matched up against Toledo back on Saturday for game two, the Herd had another win. Marshall was down 40-30 by the end of the first half, then hit a 55-33 run the rest of the way toward an 85-73 win in the end on the road. Jalen Speer finished with a team-high 20 points and five assists while Wyatt Fricks had 15 points, seven boards and four assists. Matt Van Komen doubled up as well with his 14 points and 10 rebounds in the winning effort.

Elon vs Marshall Prediction

I’ll stick with Marshall, but this should be a pretty solid matchup if both teams play to their capabilities. The Herd got off to a rough start this past weekend versus Toledo, but to their credit Marshall surged late for a nice comeback home win. The Herd ended up shooting 50.8 percent from the field with 40.5 percent (15-of-37) from 3-point range in that one alongside 24 team assists. Marshall did have 14 turnovers and got outscored in the paint 32-30 however, so it wasn’t all perfect. Still, the Herd have a couple of solid, competitive wins under their collective belt so far this season.

As for Elon, they shot a tepid 40 percent from the field in their win over UNC Greensboro but really made a good push up front with a 42-31 rebounding edge and a 36-24 advantage in the paint. The Phoenix will want to push the issue on the boards in Wednesday’s game as well.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Marshall Thundering Herd -9.5
