Eastern Illinois Panthers Betting Preview

The Panthers have had a pretty rough year so far in the record column, but there have been some tough games mixed in there. Eastern Illinois kicked things off with a loss to Valparaiso, then beat Nicholls for their first victory of the season. Two more losses followed however, as EIU fell to Notre Dame and Kentucky. After a win over Tiffin, the Panthers fell back into the loss column versus Central Arkansas. That gives Eastern Illinois a 2-4 run across their first half-dozen outings of the season.

In the Tuesday matchup with Central Arkansas, the Panthers went into the second half with a 43-26 deficit. Eastern Illinois didn’t end up getting any closer than that on a 38-34 second half and limped to an 81-60 defeat. Zion Fruster put up 21 points with two rebounds in 36 minutes to lead the team, and Terry McMorris had 11 points with five rebounds. Kooper Jacobi added 10 points with four rebounds and three assists.

Purdue Boilermakers Betting Preview

Over on the Purdue side, they’ve gotten through a half-dozen games so far this year without a blemish on the card. The Boilermakers opened with a win over Evansville, then took out Oakland in game two. Next came a road win versus a very good Alabama team, then a victory over Akron. Purdue got past Memphis in game five then dispatched Texas Tech in blowout fashion. In all that gives the Boilermakers a perfect 6-0 run so far.

In the Texas Tech game last Friday, Purdue was in the locker room with a 49-26 edge. The Boilermakers kept it going on a 37-30 run from there and took the victory 86-56. Oscar Cluff was tops with a double-double on 15 points and 15 rebounds. Trey Kaufman-Renn added 12 points with six boards, while Daniel Jacobsen had 11 points with eight rebounds in 18 minutes of action on the floor for the Boilermakers during the victory effort.

Why the Purdue Boilermakers will win

Eastern Illinois vs Purdue Prediction

I’ll probably just stick with Purdue but I’m not touching this one. The Boilermakers should utterly dominate here, and the actual game will just be a formality. Purdue blitzed a good Texas Tech team on neutral ground in their last outing, shooting an excellent 58.6 percent from the field with 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from outside, a 40-24 rebounding edge and a 38-24 advantage on points in the paint. Purdue is scoring very, very well this year; they’ve hit 80 or more points in every game so far.

As for Eastern Illinois, they couldn’t get anywhere near a middling Central Arkansas team in their last game despite shooting a reasonable 43.1 percent from the field. The Panthers were out-rebounded 32-20 in the loss and hit a tepid 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from 3-point range. EIU hasn’t been above 65 points in any game this year so it’s difficult to imagine them finishing anywhere remotely close on Friday. Still, that’s an awfully thick line.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Purdue Boilermakers -40.5
