Over on the Aggies’ side, they opened up with a string of six straight victories, then lost their next three games to South Alabama, Abilene Christian and Tulsa. After a couple more wins, New Mexico State has since gone 2-6 with losses to Florida International, Missouri State, Middle Tennessee, Liberty, Missouri State again and Florida International again. That makes for a 10-9 record this year.
In the home rematch versus Florida International on Saturday the Aggies were in trouble at the break with a 40-31 deficit. New Mexico State fought back on a 47-41 run from there and made a game of it but still ultimately lost 81-78 in the end. Leading the team with a double-double was Corey Stephenson with 25 points and 12 rebounds alongside a pair of assists. Julian Mackey added 12 points as well.

I’ll stick with the Aggies but I’m probably not touching this one as there’s not a lot to get excited about here with both teams struggling. New Mexico State took a tough home loss to a middling FIU team over the weekend thanks mostly to a rough 34.7 percent shooting from the field, a 36-24 deficit in the paint and 15 turnovers. that makes consecutive losses for the Aggies and a 1-4 run in the last five. They’ve given up a combined 165 points in the last pair as well.
These teams last met up back on January 17 in a 97-68 road win for New Mexico State. In that one the Aggies shot a nice 57.1 percent from the field with 50 percent (14-of-28) from outside and a perfect 11-of-11 at the line. New Mexico State added a 31-22 rebounding edge and just four turnovers. The Aggies certainly have the capability to control this home rematch.
