The Delaware State Hornets and the Virginia Tech Hokies meet Monday in college basketball action from the Cassell Coliseum. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best bets for this game. Here’s a Delaware State vs. Virginia Tech prediction.

Delaware State Recap

The Delaware State Hornets come into the 2024-25 season looking to shake off a 15-19 overall mark in 2023-24, including a 6-8 record in MEAC play. The Hornets would take out South Carolina State and NC Central in the MEAC tournament before falling to Howard in the conference championship. The Hornets got an invite to the CBI tournament before falling to Seattle in the first round. Stan Waterman finally has the Hornets moving in the right direction, and Martaz Robinson returns as the key cog from that success, logging 15.9 PPG and 6.5 RPG last year. Robert Smith transfers in from D-II with 17.2 PPG and 3.3 RPG and Jesse Kinard has 13.5 PPG and 4.2 RPG from D-III coming into the Hornets program as well. Corey Perkins and Alston Andrews make up key returners for the Hornets that had 20+ MPG last season. Only time will tell if DSU can take another step towards success in 2024-25.

Virginia Tech Recap

The Virginia Tech Hokies come into the 2024-25 season off of a 19-15 mark in 2023-24, finishing with a 10-10 record in ACC conference play. The Hokies would be knocked out by Florida State in the first round of the ACC tournament, leading to Virginia Tech getting invited to the NIT. The Hokies would take out Richmond before falling to Ohio State in the second round. This is going to be a new look Hokies team with a bunch of last year’s pieces gone, most notably Sean Pedulla and Hunter Cattoor. Hysier Miller transfers in from Temple after logging 15.9 PPG and 4 APG with the Owls last year while Ben Burnham had 11.9 PPG and 4.5 RPG as well last season for Charleston. This is a high-variance roster in Blacksburg. It could be a bubble team if everything goes right, or one of the worst in the ACC otherwise.

Why the Virginia Tech Hokies will win

Delaware State vs. Virginia Tech Prediction

I’m leaning towards Virginia Tech here. Backing them with a big number doesn’t mean I’m confident in their long term prospects, but Delaware State, while improved last year, did a lot of their damage against bad or non D-I opponents or in conference play. The three games against power conference teams saw Delaware State lose by 34, 27 and 29. I just don’t think Delaware State can make the step up here, so I’ll side with Virginia Tech in this one.

Chris Ruffolo's Pick: Virginia Tech -18.5
