Cornell Big Red Betting Preview

The Big Red did a pretty solid job in the Ivy League last season but didn’t quite reach the heights of the 2023-24 campaign. Cornell went 18-11 overall with a 9-5 run in conference games. That effort would put the Red in second place behind Yale in the standings. Cornell had a wild February, losing four straight games before winning four more ahead of the conference tourney. Following a win over Dartmouth, the Big Red fell to Yale in the championship game on March 16 to end their season for good.

This year Cornell gets head coach Jon Jaques back for his second season at the helm. He’ll lose three of last year’s top five scorers, so there’s a lot of production to replace. Nazir Williams, Guy Ragland and AK Okereke are gone, as well as Ryan Kiachian and Chris Cain. The good news for the Big Red is that the starting backcourt pair are back in Cooper Noard and Jake Fiegen—each being double-digit scorers last season. On the bench there’s plenty of depth as well, so Cornell is looking decent on paper to start the year.

Kent State Golden Flashes Betting Preview

Over on the Kent State side, they are coming off a nice season in 2024-25 as the team took a big step forward in the record column. The Flashes went 24-12 overall with an 11-7 run in the Mid-American Conference. That effort would put Kent State in third place among the standings, behind Akron and Miami-OH. The Flashes put up a 3-1 stretch heading into the postseason, then beat Western Michigan in the first game of the MAC Tournament. Kent State would lose to Miami-OH in the semifinals though. After a berth in the NIT, the Flashes beat St. Bonaventure and Stanford ahead of a loss to Loyola Chicago on March 26.

Kent State has one game in the books so far. The Flashes took on a tricky customer in Troy and trailed 42-34 at the half. Kent State got it together from there though, bagging a 53-45 run to force overtime. In the end the Flashes fell short in a 103-97 home loss. Leading scorer Delrecco Gillespie had 22 points with 16 boards for a double-double and Morgan Safford added 21 points with four rebounds in 37 minutes of work during the difficult loss. Rob Whaley also had a nice line on 21 points and eight boards.

Cornell vs Kent State Prediction

I’ll stick with Kent State. The Flashes need a better shooting effort here though; they put up just 38 percent from the field in the loss to Troy and got outmuscled in the paint 40-30. The effort in the second half makes me think that Kent State is a better team than that.

As for Cornell, they should be reloaded pretty well for another good run this year. The Big Red should finish in contention for the Ivy League title, provided they can avoid injuries and find some chemistry among the new arrivals. After some team-building experiences in Italy during the offseason, Cornell should be able to hit the ground running this year. For now however, I like Kent State to take the cover.
