Columbia Lions Betting Preview

Columbia is looking pretty good so far this year. They’ve got a half-dozen games in the books, with just one blemish coming versus a top-three ranked team. The Lions opened with a win over New Haven, then fell in a blowout versus UConn in game two. Since then it’s been a string of four straight victories for Columbia however, as they’ve dispatched UMass Lowell, Boston U, Lehigh and Longwood in succession. The result has been a nice 5-1 record through six games thus far.

In their Sunday matchup with Longwood, the Lions came out of the break looking at a 53-42 advantage on the scoreboard. Columbia kept it up in the second half on a 42-28 run and took the eventual victory 95-70 in the end. Blair Thompson was the team’s leading scorer with 25 points and six rebounds. Kenny Noland was close behind with 24 points, seven assists and three boards in 31 minutes, and Gerard O’Keefe added 12 points and two rebounds in the win.

Fairfield Stags Betting Preview

Over on the Fairfield side, they opened on a spotty run but they’ve since cleaned up their act in the record column. The Stags were 1-2 in their first trio, beating NJIT in between losses to Penn State and Seton Hall. An overtime win versus Stonehill came in game four, then consecutive wins over Loyola Maryland and Le Moyne. So far that gives the Stags a pretty solid 4-2 record across their first half-dozen outings of the season.

Matched up against Le Moyne over the weekend, Fairfield went into the locker room with a 56-38 advantage. The Stags were outscored 45-41 the rest of the way but still won pretty handily 97-83 by game’s end. Brandon Benjamin led the team in the win with 18 points, eight boards and four assists. Both Deuce Turner (three assists; two rebounds) and Declan Wucherpfennig (four rebounds) notched 17 points apiece in the winning effort as well.

Columbia vs Fairfield Prediction

I’ll lean toward Columbia. This should be a pretty good matchup if both teams play to their capabilities, though. The Lions didn’t have too many issues versus Longwood in their latest outing, notching a smooth 51.5 percent shooting from the field, 50 percent (18-of-36) from outside and a 35-25 rebounding advantage. The only minor blemish was the 13 turnovers, but that hardly made much of a difference in the grand scheme of things. Columbia has put up 71 or more points in four of their five wins this year, with the outlier being a 54-49 victory over Boston U.

As for Fairfield, they shot a nice 52.2 percent from the field and 20-of-23 (87 percent) in their latest win over Le Moyne. The Stags added 34 rebounds and just seven turnovers in a solid ball-control effort. That makes three straight wins for the Stags, and they’ve got a combined 182 points in their last pair. We could very well have a sizable total in this one.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Columbia Lions -2.5
