Chattanooga Mocs Betting Preview

The Mocs started out their campaign on a bit of a shaky run but they’ve been great since early January. Chattanooga opened on a spotty 9-7 record with losses to USC, Saint Mary’s, Austin Peay, Lipscomb, Indiana, Mercer and UNC Greensboro. The Mocs lost just once over the next 13 games, versus Samford on January 23. Otherwise it was wins over VMI, Wofford, Furman, East Tennessee State, Western Carolina, Mercer, Wofford, Furman, Samford, East Tennessee State, Western Carolina and the Citadel in succession. Overall through the first 29 games that gave the Mocs a 21-8 record in the books.

In their Thursday matchup with UNC Greensboro, the Mocs were up by a modest three points by halftime. Chattanooga turned it on from there with a 41-32 run however, and took the road win 75-63 in the end. Bash Wieland was the leading team scorer with 18 points and three rebounds. Trey Bonham added 16 points and eight boards, while Honor Huff also finished in double-figures with 15 points and one assist.

VMI Keydets Betting Preview

Over on the VMI side, they’ve had a pretty rocky run this year and will finish the season with a losing record. The Keydets went a rough 6-11 over their first 17 games, recording wins over only Washington College MD, Bellarmine, Christendom, Charleston Southern, Virginia Lynchburg and Regent. VMI found their footing with a 7-3 stretch over the next 10 games though, losing to only UNGreensboro (twice) and East Tennessee State in that time. The wins otherwise were versus Western Carolina, the Citadel, Furman, Wofford, Western Carolina again, the Citadel again and Mercer. After losses to Wofford and Furman, the Keydets had a 13-16 overall run through 29 games.

Matched up against Samford on Thursday, the Keydets were down 45-38 going into the second half. VMI didn’t manage to get any closer on a 50-45 second half run and lost 95-83 in the end. Tan Yildzoglu led the team in scoring during the losing effort, posting 23 points with three assists and two rebounds in 38 minutes of work. Rickey Bradley added 16 points with four rebounds and one assist, while Linus Holmstrom topped the bench scorers on 14 points with two assists in 24 minutes on the floor.

Why the VMI Keydets will win

  • The home team has won three of Chattanooga’s last four games.

Why the Chattanooga Mocs will win

  • Chattanooga has won each of its last 10 games against the Southern Conference.
  • VMI has lost six of its last seven day games at Cameron Hall against non-AP-ranked opponents.
  • VMI has lost the first half in four of its last five games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Chattanooga vs VMI Prediction

I’m going to stay with Chattanooga. The Mocs took out a pretty good UNC Greensboro team in a solid road win during their last outing, hitting 49 percent from the field alongside a 36-28 rebounding edge and just eight turnovers. Chattanooga has won 10 straight games now, with 71 or more points scored in each of those. Overall, the Mocs are looking quite good right now. As for VMI, they’ve lost four of their last five games.

The last time these teams met up was back on January 12 in a 91-66 blowout home victory for Chattanooga. In that one the Mocs shot a scorching 62 percent from the field and a stellar 67.9 percent from 3-point range alongside 24 team assists and just nine turnovers. Chattanooga held VMI to just 36.4 percent shooting on the other side as well. I wouldn’t expect this road matchup to be so one-sided, but the Mocs should still be in command during the rematch.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Chattanooga Mocs -9.5
