Chattanooga Mocs Betting Preview

The Mocs had a great run going in the regular season but it ultimately ended in disappointment. Chattanooga went a spotty 9-7 over their first 16 games despite a couple of pretty solid win streaks. After wins over VMI, Wofford and Furman, the Mocs would fall to Samford. That would be the last defeat for a while, as Chattanooga took out East Tennessee State, Western Carolina, Mercer, Wofford, Furman, Samford, East Tennessee State, Western Carolina, the Citadel, UNC Greensboro, VMI and Mercer from there. The Mocs fell to Furman in tournament action though, giving the team a 24-9 overall run through 33 games. 

In the SoCon Tournament matchup with Furman, the Mocs fought their way to overtime but eventually took the loss 80-77 after a valiant effort. Chattanooga’s leading scorer was Honor Huff with 28 points and two rebounds, while Bash Wieland added 16 points with eight boards. Trey Bonham put up 14 points with five rebounds and a pair of steals as well. 

Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders Betting Preview

Over on the MTSU side, they posted a solid record this year as well—without any extended win streaks. The Blue Raiders were 10-5 in early January thanks to losses versus Murray State, Bradley, Belmont, Tennessee and Liberty. After wins over Kennesaw State, Jacksonville State, Western Kentucky and Sam Houston, the Raiders lost to LA Tech, New Mexico State and Jacksonville State in the next four. The regular season ended on a 7-3 stretch with losses to only Jacksonville State, Louisiana Tech and Liberty. After a double-overtime tournament win over Louisiana Tech, the Raiders fell to Jacksonville State in game two. That gives Middle Tennessee a 22-11 record on the year. 

Matched up against Jacksonville State back on Friday, the Raiders entered the second half with a 35-35 tie. Middle Tennessee was outscored 35-33 the rest of the way though, falling in a tough outcome 70-68. Jlynn Counter topped the team with 18 points, eight boards and four assists. Jestin Porter added 13 points with two rebounds and two assists in 35 minutes of work as well, and Essam Mostafa had 12 points with four rebounds. 

Chattanooga vs Middle Tennessee Prediction 

I’ll lean toward Chattanooga here. That said, we should have a pretty good matchup on our hands. The Mocs didn’t play terribly versus Furman in their SoCon Semifinal loss, but they did give up 47.4 percent shooting with a 37-34 rebounding deficit and 10 turnovers. Chattanooga shot 43.8 percent from the field themselves and went a nice 10-of-12 (83.3 percent) from the line. That gives the Mocs 71 or more points in 13 straight games—a 12-1 run overall. 

As for Middle Tennessee, they played a tight game in the semifinal of the CUSA Tournament versus Jacksonville State. The only major disparity in that one was the Raiders’ 36-27 rebounding deficit—not to mention the 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from the line. Middle Tennessee played a couple of very tight games in the conference tournament, and this one is shaping up to be another competitive outing. I like Chattanooga to eke one out in the end, but you could make a case either way.
