Cal Poly Mustangs Betting Preview

The Mustangs opened the year on a .500 clip over their first 10 games, going 5-5 overall. Cal Poly has since won just two games, taking losses otherwise versus UC Riverside, Montana State, UCLA, Idaho, Long Beach State, CSU Northridge, Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara and CSU Fullerton in that time. Over the first 21 games of the year that gives the Mustangs a rough 7-14 overall run.

Last weekend versus Cal State Fullerton, the Mustangs were in the locker room with a 46-34 deficit. Cal Poly didn’t end up getting any closer on a 47-44 disadvantage in the second half and lost the game at home 93-78. Cayden Ward led the team in the futile effort with his 20 points and seven boards. Hamad Mousa added 15 points with nine rebounds and five assists.

Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners Betting Preview

Over on the Cal State Bakersfield side, they limped to a 4-8 run over their first dozen outings this year. The wins in that time were over Whittier, Western Illinois, MS Valley State and Fresno State. After four wins in the next five games, the Roadrunners have since fallen to Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego and Hawaii in the last four. That gives the team an 8-13 record so far.

In the Hawaii matchup last Thursday, the Roadrunners went into the second half looking up at a 48-30 deficit on the scoreboard. CSU Bakersfield didn’t get any closer than that, trailing 50-41 in the second half on the way to a road loss 98-71 in the end. Dailin Smith led the team on 28 points with two boards and Mike Price added 12 points in 21 minutes during the defeat.

Cal Poly vs Cal State Bakersfield Prediction

I’ll lean toward CSU Bakersfield. I’m probably not touching this one though. The Roadrunners didn’t shoot very well in their road loss to Hawaii last week, hitting just 35.1 percent from the field and 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from outside. Cal State Bakersfield added a 46-28 deficit in the paint but also had just seven turnovers along the way. The Roadrunners have lost four straight games, giving up 75 or more points in each.

As for Cal Poly, they shot a reasonable 43.5 percent from the field with a 35-30 rebounding advantage in their latest home loss to Cal State Fullerton. The Mustangs coughed up 18 turnovers in that one however, which torpedoed their chances at staying close. Cal Poly has lost five of the last six, giving up 86 or more points in each of their last four losses.

Andrew Jett's Pick: CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners +1.5
