American Eagles Betting Preview
The Eagles took a big step forward in 2024-25, blowing right past the previous season’s record of 16-15. American would ultimately go 22-13 overall with a 13-5 run in the Patriot League. That would put the Eagles in a regular-season championship tie with Bucknell as things wound down. American stormed through the conference tournament, bagging the championship with wins over Lafayette, Colgate and Navy. In their First Four matchup with Mount St. Mary’s on March 19 as part of the NCAA Tournament however, American would fall 83-72 to finish off their season for good.
This year American retains head coach Duane Simpkins for his second year and the expectations are high—even with just one starter returning. Matt Rogers and his 16.7 points per game are gone, leaving room for guys like Greg Jones (10.3 PPG) to shine. Senior Geoff Sprouse (6.9 PPG) will have a large role as well—provided he can stay healthy this season. Wyatt Nausadis (3.1 PPG) also seems primed to have a breakout year for the Eagles if all goes according to plan.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons Betting Preview
Over on the Wake Forest side, they had a pretty good season themselves in 2024-25, even though they got lost near the top of a talented ACC. The Deacons would go 21-11 overall with a 13-7 run in the conference, placing the team behind only Duke, Louisville and Clemson in the standings. After losing four of their final seven regular-season games however, the Deacons couldn’t maintain any momentum going into the conference tournament. Wake Forest would fall to North Carolina 68-59 on March 13 in the quarterfinals to end their campaign.
This year Wake Forest will have some rebuilding to do as well in Steve Forbes’ sixth season as head coach. The Deacons retain just one starter from last year and just four players total. Washington State’s Nate Calmese was an early pickup, and he’s since gotten buzz as a potential first-team all-conference selection. He’ll get to work with Tre’Von Spillers, who posted 9.9 PPG and 7.6 RPG last year in a nice effort, starting all 32 games for Wake Forest.

American vs Wake Forest Prediction
I’m likely going to take a stab on American here, but you could argue it either way quite easily. The Eagles won’t be taking anyone by surprise this year, and as a result they’ll have a target on the back of a very different-looking roster. Specifically this team is much younger, as four of American’s top seven scorers last year were seniors. It’s going to be an up-and-down season, but the Eagles have more than enough talent to showcase.
As for the Deacons, they were rightfully disappointed after getting overlooked for an NCAA Tournament bid last season and turned down a potential appearance in the NIT afterward. In hindsight it was probably the right thing to do with so many players preparing to leave the program. This year the rebuild looks pretty good, as the coaching staff has brought in some real talent from the transfer portal. It may take a few games for the chemistry to develop however, so I like American to power out a tight cover here in the opener.
