Alabama State Hornets Betting Preview

The Hornets have seven games in the bag so far this year, but they’ve been unable to keep their heads above the .500 mark during that stretch. Alabama State opened up with a loss to Florida State, then took a couple of wins versus UAB and Virginia-Lynchburg. Since then it’s been a 1-3 stretch with a lone win over IUPUI among losses to Colorado, Air Force and SIU Edwardsville. That gives the Hornets a 3-4 record across their first seven outings of the year.

Back on Sunday versus SIU Edwardsville, the Hornets were up comfortably 37-28 by the break. Alabama State was blitzed in the second half on a 55-31 deficit though, and ended up losing 83-68 in the end. Leading the team in the defeat was Micah Simpson with 20 points and four boards. Asjon Anderson added 18 points with four assists and two rebounds, and Tyler Byrd had nine points in 19 minutes of work for the Hornets.

New Mexico Lobos Betting Preview

Over on the Lobos’ side, they got off to a nice start this year with three straight victories. Those wins came in succession over East Texas A&M, Texas-Arlington and UC Riverside. A couple of losses came in the next pair versus New Mexico State and Nebraska, but the Lobos would bounce back with a tight win over Mississippi State last week. That gives New Mexico a 4-2 record across their first half-dozen outings of the season so far.

Matched up against Mississippi State on Friday, the Lobos went into the locker room with a 40-39 edge. New Mexico matched that 40-39 run in the second half as well, leading to a very tight 80-78 win in the end. Tops in scoring was Tomislav Buljan with 19 points and 21 boards. Uriah Tenette had 13 points with five rebounds and three assists while Deyton Albury chipped in 13 points and one rebound in 23 minutes during the victory effort for the Lobos.

Alabama State vs New Mexico Prediction

I’ll lean toward New Mexico. The Lobos eked past a struggling Mississippi State team by the skin of their proverbial teeth last week. New Mexico shot 41.3 percent from the field and 76 percent (19-of-25) from the line alongside a 46-35 rebounding edge and just nine turnovers. Overall it wasn’t too bad of an effort. That gives the Lobos 72 or more points in five of six games so far this year, and 74 or more points in all four of their victories.

As for Alabama State, they were looking good at halftime versus SIU Edwardsville in their last appearance but really lost the handle in the second half. The Hornets shot just 32.8 percent from the field and 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) from the line in the defeat while getting pushed around in the paint on a 40-18 scoring deficit. Alabama State has been below 69 points in three of the last four games, and they’re really going to have to push on offense in order to keep a cover pace in this one.
