Colgate Preview: Can the Raiders Stick Around With the Bears?

Colgate improved to 25-9 after defeating Lehigh in the Patriot League Championship, 74-55. The Raiders completed the mission with a strong two-way effort versus the Mountain Hawks, and they’ll have to maintain the same energy here against the Bears. Colgate is scoring 71.5 points per game, on 47% shooting, while allowing 63.2 ppg, and they’re 9-1 over their previous ten games.

Colgate Team Profile

  • Sophomore guard Braeden Smith posted a 15-point double-double in the win over Lehigh, and he leads Colgate in scoring (12.5) and assists (5.8), while grabbing 5.5 rpg.
  • Senior forward Keegan Records has scored 12 points or more in three of the last five games, and he leads the Raiders in rebounding (6.3), while scoring 10.9 ppg.
  • Lancaster native Ryan Moffatt led the way with 14 points in the Holy Cross victory, and he’s third on the team at 10.4 ppg and 4.4 rpg.

Baylor Preview: Will the Bears Put the Raiders Away Early?

Baylor enters at 23-10 after falling to Iowa State in the Big 12 Semifinals, 76-62. The Bears were outscored in each half by the Cyclones, and they’ll look to turn things around when they face off with the Raiders this Friday. Baylor is scoring 80.5 points per game, on 48.3% shooting, while allowing 71.2 ppg, and they’re 6-4 over their previous ten games. Baylor did beat the likes of TCU, Kansas, Texas, and Cincinnati late in the campaign.

Baylor Team Profile

  • Freshman guard Ja’Kobe Walter was bottled up in the loss to Iowa State, but he still leads Baylor in scoring (14.4), while grabbing 4.4 rpg.
  • Toledo transfer RayJ Dennis has tallied eight dimes or more in four of the last six games, and he’s averaging 13.3 ppg and a team-leading 6.8 apg.
  • Freshman center Yves Missi posted a 14-point double-double in the ISU matchup, and he leads the Bears in rebounding (5.8), while scoring 11.1 ppg.
  • Senior guard Jalen Bridges poured in a season-best 32 points in the win over Texas, and he’s up to 11.9 ppg and 5.7 rpg.

Colgate vs Baylor Trends

  • COL is 17-15-1 against the spread, with a 12-20-1 O/U record
  • BAY is 18-11-3 ATS, with a 17-15 over/under record.

Colgate vs Baylor Prediction: Bears Claw Their Way Into Round of 32

Baylor caught a break here with a manageable draw against Colgate following a shaky finish, and I think they’ll come out sharp here in the first round. The Bears will carry physical advantages all over the court, so if they lock in and impose their will, a double-digit victory will be within reach. Colgate could make this a sticky game defensively, so the Under will be in play, but I like tilting Baylor’s margin, and backing a sizable win for them here in the Round of 64. Baylor is a massive favorite to go through, where they should meet the winner of the New Mexico vs. Clemson game.
