Oakland Preview: Can the Golden Grizzlies Keep Things Going?

Oakland enters at 23-11 after defeating Milwaukee in the Horizon League Championship, 83-76. The Golden Grizzlies outscored the Panthers in both halves to punch their tickets to the Dance, and they’ll look to bring that momentum into their matchup here with the Wildcats. Oakland is scoring 76.4 points per game, on 45.2% shooting, while allowing 72.9 ppg, and they’re 8-2 over their previous ten games.

Oakland Team Profile

  • Senior forward Trey Townsend poured in a career-high 38 points in the win over Milwaukee, and he leads Milwaukee in scoring (16.3) and rebounding (7.7).
  • Veteran guard Blake Lampman scored 20 points in the season finale win over Detroit, and he’s averaging 13.6 ppg and a team-leading 3.1 apg.
  • Senior guard Jack Gohlke is one of the top three-point shooters in the country at 36.2%, and he’s third on the team at 11.9 ppg.

Kentucky Preview: Will the Wildcats Evade the Upset?

Kentucky comes in at 23-9 after losing to Texas A&M in the SEC Quarterfinals, 97-87. The Wildcats were sent home early by the Aggies, and they’ll look to prevent a similar result here versus the Golden Grizzlies. UK is scoring 89.4 points per game, on 49.7% shooting, while allowing 79.7 ppg, and they’re 7-3 over their previous ten games.

Kentucky Team Profile

  • Senior guard Antonio Reeves has hit the 21-point mark or higher in six of the last eight games, and he leads UK in scoring (20.2).
  • Freshman guard Rob Dillingham went for a team-high 27 points in the loss to A&M, and he’s up to 15.2 ppg for the season.
  • First-year guard Reed Sheppard led the way with 27 points in the road victory at Tennessee, and he’s averaging 12.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg, and a team-leading 4.5 apg.
  • WVU transfer Tre Mitchell leads UK in rebounding (6.9), while scoring 10.7 ppg.

Kentucky Wildcats Team Facts

  • Kentucky has hit the Team Total Over in 22 of their last 30 games

Oakland vs Kentucky Trends

  • OAK is 21-13 against the spread, with a 20-13-1 O/U record.
  • UK is 18-14 ATS, with a 23-9 over/under record.

Oakland vs Kentucky Prediction: Spread

The possibility for an upset is there for Oakland, but after leaving the SEC Tournament prematurely, we should see a sharp Kentucky squad here in round one. The Wildcats closed the season on a strong note, tallying ranked wins over Alabama, Auburn, and Tennessee along the way, and I don’t think they’ll slip up here. Oakland carries the experience and shooting to stick around in this game, so I like tilting the margin in Kentucky’s favor, and backing on them to advance to the Round of 32 here.

Oakland vs Kentucky Prediction: Total

Both schools lean and thrive on the offensive end, and if you like points this could wind up being the contest for you. Kentucky has hit the 85-point mark in six straight games, and when they’re on, they’re arguably the top offensive team in the country. Oakland plays fast and likes to shoot the ball at will, so if they’re able to carry their end of the bargain, Kentucky can handle the heavy duty. It’s a big number for a tournament game, but again, if you like shootouts, the Over may be worth a look here Thursday evening.
