The Canisius Golden Griffins and the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers meet Tuesday in MAAC Tournament college basketball action from Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall. Let’s get into our Canisius vs. Mount St. Mary’s prediction. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Pick Dawgz.
Canisius Golden Griffins
The Griffins kicked off their season on a rough 7-11 run through their first 18 games. Canisius would then hit a 2-4 stretch with wins over only Manhattan and Iona. Since then it’s been a 4-2 run with victories versus Siena, Niagara, Mount St. Mary’s and Manhattan during that time.
In the Manhattan game on Saturday, the Griffins had a tough battle but came out on top. Canisius scored 37 points in the first half, 25 in the second and 11 in overtime for a 73-70 win. Tre Dinkins was the leading team scorer on 19 points with four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers
Over on the Mountaineers’ side, they were 11-13 in early February following a four-game win streak. Mount St. Mary’s has gone a rough 2-5 since then however, falling to Rider, Fairfield, Saint Peters, Canisius and Fairfield again. The two wins were over Iona and Niagara.
In the Fairfield matchup over the weekend, the Mountaineers jumped out to a 54-38 lead by the break. Mount St. Mary’s lost the handle in the second however, giving up 58 points in a 96-92 loss. De’Shayne Montgomery was the team’s top scorer with his 24 points and seven assists.
ANDREW’S FREE CANISIUS VS MOUNT ST. MARY’S PREDICTION
I’ll stick with Canisius. Probably not touching this one, though. The Griffins had some trouble with a struggling Manhattan team in their last game but everything worked out in the end. Canisius shot a tepid 41.2 percent from the field and had 16 turnovers but also won the rebounding battle 38-27 (12-2- offensive). The Griffins had been below 70 points in four straight prior to that overtime finish.
One of those low-scoring games was a 61-56 home win over Mount St. Mary’s on March 1. Canisius didn’t shoot terribly (44.1 percent) in that one and had 35 rebounds in the victory. This rematch could probably go either way, but I’m leaning toward Canisius ever so slightly.
Andrew’s Pick Canisius Golden Griffins +2.5
