The Georgia Southern Eagles and the Appalachian State Mountaineers meet Saturday in Sun Belt Tournament college basketball action from Pensacola Bay Center. Georgia Southern Eagles
The Eagles hit a six-game losing streak in February versus Troy, Appalachian State, South Alabama, Buffalo, Coastal Carolina and James Madison. Since then Georgia Southern is 4-1 though, beating Texas State, Marshall, Old Dominion and South Alabama in that time.
On Thursday versus South Alabama in the tournament game, the Eagles were up by three points going into the second half. Georgia Southern hit a 39-37 run the rest of the way and won 76-71. Tyren Moore was the leading team scorer on his 18 points with five rebounds and three assists.
App State Mountaineers
Over on the Appalachian State side, they lost to only Northern Illinois, Oregon State, UNC Asheville, Troy and Texas State over their first 24 games this year. The Mountaineers have beaten Toledo, Marshall, Louisiana, Old Dominion and Arkansas State in the seven games since then.
Last Friday versus Arkansas State, the Mountaineers didn’t have too many issues. Appalachian State posted a 43-29 advantage in the first half and followed that up with a 37-28 run from there for an 80-57 blowout win. TreVon Spillers and Donovan Gregory each had a team-high 15 points in that one.
ANDREW’S FREE GEORGIA SOUTHERN VS APPALACHIAN STATE PREDICTION
I’ll try Georgia Southern in this one. The Eagles are playing surprisingly well lately and posted a nice effort versus South Alabama in their last game. Georgia Southern shot 47.5 percent from the field with a 49-32 rebounding edge in that one, but did cough up 21 total turnovers for 19 Jaguars points.
The last meeting between these teams was a close one, with App State eking out an 85-84 overtime win on the road. Georgia Southern shot very well in that one (52.9 percent) but did get out-rebounded 42-34. I like this one to be competitive as well, and I think the Eagles have a legitimate cover shot if they play to their capabilities.
Andrew’s Pick Georgia Southern Eagles +12.5
