The Longwood Lancers and the Winthrop Eagles meet Friday in Big South Tournament college basketball action from Qubein Center. Let’s get into our Longwood vs Winthrop prediction. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Pick Dawgz.
Longwood Lancers
The Lancers got off to a nice 12-1 start this year over their first 13 games. From December 20 through February 7 however, Longwood was only able to win two games. In the last six outings it’s been better on a 4-2 run with wins over Winthrop, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville and High Point.
In the High Point matchup over the weekend, the Lancers were up 33-32 going into the second half. Longwood posted a 41-40 advantage the rest of the way and eked out a 74-72 win. Johnathan Massie was the leading team scorer on 16 points with five boards off the bench.
Winthrop Eagles
Over on the Winthrop side, they were looking decent at 13-6 through their first 19 outings. The Eagles haven’t been able to win consecutive games since then, however. Winthrop is just 1-3 in their last four with losses to Presbyterian, High Point and Gardner-Webb alongside a win over USC Upstate.
Matched up against Gardner-Webb on Saturday, the Eagles went into the break with a 36-31 deficit. Winthrop hit a 33-29 advantage in the second half but it wasn’t enough in a 65-64 loss. Michael Anumba was tops on the team with 16 points and six rebounds in 34 minutes of work.
ANDREW’S FREE LONGWOOD VS WINTHROP PREDICTION
I’ll lean toward Longwood in this one. We should have a pretty competitive matchup here, though. The Lancers played well in their last outing versus High Point (outside of the 16 turnovers, that is). In that one Longwood hit 44.1 percent from the field and had a 41-31 rebounding edge. It’s been a good scoring run for the Lancers lately; they’ve hit 69 or more points in six straight games.
These teams split the season series with each team bagging a home win. Winthrop took it 68-60 in OT on January 3 and Longwood won 84-74 on February 10. The Lancers got off to a quick start in the latest meeting with a 42-28 first half, and both teams ended up with 15 turnovers. This one’s probably going to be a close outcome but I like the Lancers to power out a cover/win if all goes well.
Andrew’s Pick Longwood Lancers -1
