The Citadel Bulldogs
The Citadel got off to an 8-5 start this year through their first 14 games. The Bulldogs hit the skids after that however, winning just one game (over Mercer) from December 30 to February 17. In the last four the Citadel is 2-2 with wins over VMI and Chattanooga alongside losses to Mercer and ETSU.
Matched up against East Tennessee State on Wednesday, the Citadel fell behind 38-29 in the first half. The Bulldogs were outscored 43-34 the rest of the way in an 81-63 loss. Leading the way in the losing effort was Madison Durr with 18 points and six assists in 37 minutes.
Samford Bulldogs
Over on the Samford side, they lost to Purdue and VCU in their first pair of games. The Bulldogs would lose only once more from November 10 to February 17, however. Likewise, Samford is 2-2 in their last four with losses to Mercer and Wofford around wins over Furman and ETSU.
Back on Wednesday versus Wofford, Samford was outscored 37-29 during a rough start. The Bulldogs didn’t end up getting any closer on a 54-40 run from there and lost 91-69. Riley Allenspach led the team with his 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
ANDREW’S FREE CITADEL VS SAMFORD PREDICTION
I’ll stay with Samford. The Bulldogs need a good bounce-back here following a rough game versus Wofford, though. Samford shot just 38.2 percent from the field in that one with a 44-30 rebounding deficit and 14 turnovers (leading to 20 Terriers points). It was the Bulldogs’ lowest points total since 68 back on January 24.
The good news is that Samford should match up well here. The last time these teams met, Samford hit an 80-64 road victory on January 6 thanks to 51.6 percent shooting from the field. The Citadel coughed up 19 turnovers in that one, which led to 23 points on the other side. Samford should be in complete control during the home rematch, and I like a cover here.
Andrew’s Pick Samford Bulldogs -14.5
