California Preview: Will the Golden Bears Go Out With a Fight?

California fell to 13-16 after losing to Colorado in Boulder, 88-78. The Golden Bears couldn’t overcome a slow start versus the Buffaloes, and they’ll seek different results this Saturday in Salt Lake City. Cal is scoring 74.8 points per game, on 42.7% shooting, while allowing 76.7 ppg, and they’re currently 10th in the Pac-12 with a 6-8 record in league play. The Golden Bears are 3-7 over their last ten games, and they’re 8-6 in Berkeley.

Cal Team Profile

  • Mark Madsen’s group moves at a respectable pace, averaging 72.8 possessions per game (80th), and they’ve connected on 34.3% of their three-point attempts.
  • Former TTU guard Jaylon Tyson came thru with a clutch 28 points in the narrow road win over Washington, and he leads California in scoring (20.3), while grabbing 7.1 rpg.
  • Vancouver native Fardaws Aimaq posted a 13-point double-double in the win over UW,  and he leads the Pac-12 in rebounding (11.2), while scoring 14.7 ppg.
  • NAU transfer Jalen Cone came thru with 19 points in the Arizona State victory, and he’s third on the team at 13.3 ppg.

Utah Preview: Can the Utes Capitalize on Senior Night?

Utah moved to 17-11 after defeating Stanford at home, 90-68. The Utes used a fast start to beat the Cardinal, and they’ll look to avoid trading a fifth straight game here in their home finale. Utah is scoring 77.8 points per game, on 47.0% shooting, while allowing 70.5 ppg, and they’re currently 8th in the Pac-12 with a 2-7 record in league play. • Senior guard Gabe Madsen went for a team-high 18 points in the versus the Buffs, and he’s second on the team at 13.0 ppg.
  • Georgia Tech transfer Deivon Smith posted a double-double in the road win over UCLA, and he’s posting a line of 11.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, and a team-leading 6.1 apg.

Cal vs Utah Trends

  • Utah leads the head-to-head series, 19-17, after winning four of the last five meetings.
  • CAL is 15-14 against the spread, with a 18-11 O/U record
  • UTA is 13-15 ATS, with a 14-12-2 over/under record.

California vs Utah Prediction

Utah’s bubble hopes are slim, but they’ll receive a manageable matchup by facing Cal in their home finale. The Golden Bears have made strides under former Laker Mark Madsen, but the Utes have been very sharp at the Huntsman Center this season, and they should be able to capitalize on the Senior Night energy in the building. California is capable of putting points on the scoreboard, so the Over will be in play, but this feels like a safe spot to trust the hosts. Back Utah this Saturday night in Pac-12 play.
