Butler Preview: Can the Bulldogs Capitalize?

Butler fell to 16-13 after falling to St. John’s in Indianapolis, 82-59. The Bulldogs couldn’t keep up with the Red Storm, and they’ll look to figure things out here in Chicago. Butler is scoring 81.6 points per game, on 49.4% shooting, while allowing 72.7 ppg, and they’re currently 9th in the Big East with a 7-11 record in conference play. The Bulldogs are 4-6 over their previous ten games, and they’ve gone 3-7 on the road this season.

Butler Team Profile

  • Thad Matta’s team plays at a solid pace, averaging 72.5 possessions per game (90th), and they’ve been able to connect on 36.0% of their three-point attempts.
  • Michigan St. transfer Pierre Brooks II has knocked down multiple treys in three straight games, and he leads Butler in scoring (14.8), while grabbing 4.1 rpg.
  • Montreal native Jahmyl Telford went for a team-high 19 points in the Villanova matchup,  and he’s second on the team at 13.7 ppg and 4.9 rpg.
  • Former Irvine guard DJ Davis has cooled off since a hit stretch to open the season, but he's still averaging 13.4 ppg.
  • Senior center Jalen Thomas leads the Bulldogs in boards (6.1), while scoring 7.3 ppg.

DePaul Preview: Do the Blue Demons Have a Pulse?

DePaul dropped to 3-25 after losing to Xavier in Cincinnati, 91-58. The Blue Demons were bullied once again by the Musketeers, and they may be in for another long weekend here against the Bulldogs. DePaul is scoring 64.3 points per game, on 42.1% shooting, while allowing 77.2 ppg, and they’re currently last in the Big East with a 0-17 record in conference play. The Blue Demons are 0-10 over their last ten games, and they’ve gone 0-7 on the road this season.

DePaul Team Profile

  • Matt Brady’s group tends to move slowly, averaging 70.5 possessions per game (192nd), and they’ve connected on 33.7% of their three-point shots.
  • Leading scorer Chico Carter Jr. has struggled since returning to the lineup, but he still leads DePaul in scoring (10.9).
  • Toronto native Elijah Fisher has scored 14 points or more in four straight games, and he’s up to 10.3 ppg.

Butler vs DePaul Trends

  • Butler leads the head-to-head series, 19-6, after winning five straight matchups.
  • BUT is 12-16 against the spread, with a 14-14 O/U record
  • DEP is 9-19 ATS, with a 15-13 over/under record.

Butler vs DePaul Prediction

Butler wasn’t able to dodge the depth of the Big East this season, but they haven’t been nearly as bad as DePaul. The Bulldogs closed February on a bad note, and they should approach this matchup with getting back into the win column in mind. The Blue Demons have been very underwhelming to say the least, and after dropping 16 straight games, they will likely struggle again this weekend. This one should come to a matter of how much, so tilt Butler’s number slightly, and roll with them for this conference battle.
