Gonzaga Bulldogs
The Bulldogs got off to a 16-6 start this year with losses to only Purdue, Washington, UConn, San Diego State, Santa Clara and Saint Mary’s in that time. Since then it’s been a win streak versus Portland, Kentucky, Loyola Marymount, Pacific, Portland again and Santa Clara over the last six.
In the Santa Clara game back on Saturday, the Bulldogs came out of the break with a 52-46 edge. Gonzaga closed on a 42-35 run and powered out the victory 94-81. Graham Ike was the leading team scorer in the win with his 26 points, seven rebounds and one steal in 33 minutes of work.
San Franciso Dons
Over on the Dons’ side, they lost to only Boise State, Grand Canyon, Arizona State, Utah State, Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga over tier first 21 outings. San Francisco has beaten Portland, San Diego, Pacific, Pepperdine, Santa Clara, LMU and Pepperdine again over the last eight games.
Matched up against Pepperdine at home on Saturday, the Dons jumped out to a solid 43-29 edge in the first half. San Francisco kept the pressure up with a 49-39 run the rest of the way in a blowout win 92-68. Ndewedo Newbury came off the bench to lead the team on 19 points and five boards.
ANDREW’S FREE GONZAGA VS SAN FRANCISCO PREDICTION
I’ll try the Dons in this one. San Francisco had little trouble with Pepperdine in their latest outing, thanks mostly to 59.7 percent shooting from the field, 48 percent from 3-point range (12-of-25), 32 rebounds and 20 team assists. The Dons have now scored 71 or more points in eight of their last nine games—a 7-2 stretch.
The last time these teams met up on January 25, San Francisco took a tough road loss 77-72. The Dons were competitive most of the way and held a 41-32 edge on the boards (13-6 offensive). That said San Francisco shot a tepid 39.1 percent from the field and gave 15 turnovers for 19 Bulldogs points. If the Dons continue to play well, they’ll be a formidable foe in this home rematch. Provided they can keep the offense moving in the second half I think San Francisco has a great shot here.
