Texas Longhorns
The Longhorns managed a pretty solid 14-5 run over their first 19 games to kick off the season. Texas has had some tough matchups since then on a 3-5 run, though. The losses in that time were to BYU, Houston, Iowa State, Houston again and Kansas. The wins otherwise came versus TCU, West Virginia and Kansas State.
In the Kansas game on Saturday, the Longhorns were drilled 45-25 in the first half alone. Texas got better in the second half on 42 more points but didn’t make much scoreboard progress in an 86-67 loss. Tyrese Hunter and Dillon Mitchell were the top team scorers on 12 points each.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Over on the Red Raiders’ side, they had a solid start to the season as well with a 16-3 run through their first 19 outings. Texas Tech is 3-5 in their last eight as well, falling to TCU, Cincinnati, Baylor, Iowa State and UCF with wins otherwise over UCF, Kansas and TCU.
On Saturday in the rematch versus UCF, the Raiders fell back into the loss column. Texas Tech faced a 36-32 deficit in the locker room and fell further behind from there on a 39-29 run in a 75-61 result. Darrion Williams was the team’s leading performer with a double-double in 19 points and 11 boards.
ANDREW’S FREE TEXAS VS TEXAS TECH PREDICTION
I’ll take a stab on Texas Tech in this one. We should have a pretty good matchup here regardless, though. The Red Raiders had trouble with a tricky UCF team in their last outing, shooting a tepid 37 percent from the field with 14 total turnovers (leading to 17 UCF points). It was the lowest points total (61) since Texas Tech scored just 54 against Houston way back on January 17.
When these teams last met up back on January 6, Texas Tech pulled off a 78-67 road victory. The Red Raiders shot a nice 52.8 percent from the field in that one and scored 23 points off 14 Longhorns turnovers. Texas probably won’t be as sloppy with the ball in this rematch, but I think Texas Tech can pull off the home cover if all goes well. Should be a fun game to watch.
Andrew’s Pick Texas Tech Red Raiders -4.5
