The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Minnesota Golden Gophers meet Thursday in college basketball action from Williams Arena. Ohio State is 15-11 overall and coming off an upset win over Purdue this past weekend. As for Minnesota, they’re 16-9 this year following a win versus Rutgers on Sunday. Let’s get into our Ohio State vs. Minnesota prediction. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Pick Dawgz.
Ohio State Buckeyes
The Buckeyes lost just five of their first 18 games this year, then hit a losing streak versus Nebraska, Northwestern, Illinois, Iowa and Indiana. Since then Ohio State is 2-1 with wins over Maryland and Purdue surrounding a loss to Wisconsin in that trio.
Back on Sunday versus Purdue, the Buckeyes pulled off an upset home win. Ohio State went into the second half with a lead 35-30, then kept the pace from there on 38 more points in a big victory 73-69. Bruce Thornton was the top performer on 22 points with four rebounds and three assists.
Minnesota Golden Gophers
Over on the Gophers’ side, they posted a 12-7 run over their first 19 games to open up the season. Minnesota hit a three-game win streak over Penn State, Northwestern and Michigan State but since have gone 1-2 with losses to Iowa and Purdue before a win over Rutgers.
Matched up against the Scarlet Knights on Sunday, the Gophers went into the second half all knotted up at 37-37. Minnesota hit a 44-33 run from there and pulled off the win 81-70. Pharrel Payne was the leading team scorer with his 21 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.
ANDREW’S FREE OHIO STATE VS MINNESOTA PREDICTION
I’ll try Minnesota here. You could make a case either way though, especially with the Buckeyes coming off that big win. That said, the Gophers played well against Rutgers in their last outing, hitting 51 percent from the field with 37 rebounds and 20 team assists. That makes 76 or more points in three straight games for Minnesota, but they’re just 1-2 in that time.
As for Ohio State, they’ve scored pretty well lately themselves with 73 or more points in five of the last six outings. The Buckeyes have a tendency to give up a lot of points however, so if Minnesota can find some momentum on offense early I think they’ve got a good shot at a cover. Should be a great matchup regardless, though.
