The Seminoles lost to Virginia in their last game. As for Virginia Tech, they’re fresh off a loss to Notre Dame that dropped the Hokies to 13-10 this year. Let’s get into our Florida State vs. Virginia Tech prediction. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Pick Dawgz.

Florida State Seminoles

The Seminoles managed a .500 record over their first 12 games. Florida State has improved on a 7-4 run since then with wins over Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Notre Dame, Miami, Syracuse and Boston College. The losses otherwise were versus Clemson, North Carolina, Louisville and Virginia.

In the Virginia matchup on Saturday, the Seminoles trailed 34-30 going into the second half. Florida State kept the pace from there with 46 more points but couldn’t make the comeback on a 80-76 loss. Jamir Watkins was the leading team scorer with 21 points, four rebounds and two steals.

Virginia Tech Hokies

Over on the Virginia Tech side, they got off to a pretty solid 9-3 start this year. The Hokies have gone just 4-7 in the last 11 though, losing to Wake Forest, Florida State, Miami, Virginia, Duke Miami again and Notre Dame. The wins came versus Clemson, NC State, Boston College and Georgia Tech.

In their latest appearance over the weekend versus Notre Dame, the Hokies went into the break with a 39-35 advantage. Virginia Tech lost the handle from there on a 39-27 deficit though and lost 74-66 in the end. Hunter Cattoor topped the team with 18 points and two rebounds.

  • Virginia Tech ranks 8th among Division 1 teams for free throw percentage this season (78.9%).
  • Virginia Tech ranks T26th among Division 1 teams for opponent rebounds per game this season (31.6).
  • Florida State ranks 17th among Division 1 teams for steals per game this season (9.2).
  • Florida State ranks 23rd among Division 1 teams for opponent assist to turnover ratio this season (0.79).

I’m going to take a stab on Florida State, but I could go either way on this one. The Seminoles didn’t play terribly versus a good Virginia team in their last game, shooting 51.1 percent from the field with a 29-27 rebounding edge. Florida State shot an abysmal 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) from 3-point range and had just eight team assists, though. The Seminoles have now given up 75 or more points in three of the last four games (losing all three).

These teams last met back on January 6 in a tight 77-74 home win for Florida State. The Seminoles had a rough time from 3-point range in that one as well (3-of-15) and missed 11 of their 29 free throws (62.1 percent). It was a sloppy game on both sides with 26 total turnovers, so this rematch may not be pretty. I’m leaning toward the Seminoles powering out the cover, but it’s a coin flip. Should be a fun one to watch, though.
